This month, my retrospective moves to 2002, and my third Avalon Romance. Each month, until I run out of years in which I had a published book, I'm sharing a retrospective of my books and tidbits about writing them here on my usual monthly blogging date.

My First Award-winning Book

Mandy and the Mayor, in its proposal form—three chapters and a synopsis—was the winner of the New Jersey Romance Writers 1999 Put Your Heart in a Book Contest for Short Contemporary Romance. I worked on it before Love Undercover and targeted it to Harlequin's Silhouette Romance, which paid far better than Avalon. Despite the award, Silhouette didn't buy it, so I submitted it to Avalon Books, which did.

The last place Mandy Harris would choose to spend her summer is Whitmore Mills, a sleepy village in the Adirondack Mountains. She far prefers city life. But the village needs a director for its summer recreation program, and the deal is too good to pass up. Christmas isn't over yet! - by Susan Aylworth

So here we are on the day after, putting everything away until next year and suffering the post-Christmas letdown. Or not! No one says we have to let go of the sweetest season of the year. I wrote my Christmas Town series because I love the idea of a place that celebrates the season all year. Then, just when I finished Book 5, I found such a place. 

Frankenmuth, Michigan is roughly 90 miles north of Detroit, minutes south of Lake Huron. Founded in the late 1800s by German immigrants, it retains a European flavor and boasts the largest Christmas store in the United States (possibly in the world). It also has a famous German restaurant and bakery, a themed, mostly-indoor water park, and a number of other attractions that make it a tourist destination. Roger and I visited there as a post-Thanksgiving romp with our son, Paul, and his family. We couldn't resist having our picture taken at Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. 

I didn't know about Frankenmuth, or about Bronner's, when I created Bedford Falls, California, and put the Everything Christmas Wonderland on the corner of Main Street and Bedford Boulevard, but it was a bit like coming home to visit Bronner's and drive down the lighted and lovely Main Street of Frankenmuth. Christmas all year!

Dr. Marco Fuentes works out during his off hours from the town's medical clinic. He's instantly attracted to the statuesque beauty and her efforts to improve her health. It takes a box of abandoned kittens to bring them together and a little Christmas magic to overcome the damage a well-meaning mom has done to her daughter's self-image.

Last fall a group of Sweet Romance Reads authors did a promotion in which we introduced Christmas novellas one week at a time for several weeks leading up to the Christmas holidays, and Puppies for Christmas was born. We used the cute little dog below to mark all the books.

A number of us plan to write more Puppies for Christmas novellas again this year. So the answer is: No, it's not too early to think about Christmas. In order to be ready for the promotion, we have to write the novellas. That takes weeks. Then we have to get them edited. We have to proofread. We have to format them for publication. There are a lot of things to do in order to get ready to publish a book. One very important item is the book cover. You know we all do judge a book by its cover. Although I'm still writing the book, I already have my cover. Here it is.

Well, gang, we made it to autumn, the season I love best. Here in southern Indiana, we've even had a few days of seasonal temperatures. Nice! Of course, as I write this we're back to the 80s. Fingers crossed that it doesn't last long.

I love pretty much everything about fall. Crickets singing, the sun's altered slant during the day. The fact that it's still dark outside when I get up in the morning, and dark by the time I go to bed. The list is long...

It's time to prepare for cooler days and nights, and I'm jazzed about it.

I'm re-watching one of my favorite series, Northern Exposure. In a recent episode, the inhabitants of Cicely, Alaska were getting ready for winter by overeating. Like a bear preparing to hibernate, I guess. 

Much as I adore my buddies in Cicely, adding to my waistline isn't on the agenda. And as an apartment dweller, I don't need to stock up on firewood or check the exterior of the house to be sure it'll withstand the cold north wind.

So what are my preparations?

I have bought some books. Hardbacks and paperbacks. I love reading ebooks, but at this time of year, it's especially nice to curl up with a hefty read. (Happy endings only!)

And speaking of curling up, that's much cozier under the alpaca blanket a friend gave me, or for super cold times, the Indiana University stadium blanket. 

I bought some cornmeal from a local historic mill. I'm not a cookie or cake baker, but on cold days I enjoy homemade soup with a cornstick or two on the side. (You're right to think I'll need to watch the waist if this happens too often.)

A few weeks ago, I bought three beautiful chrysanthemums from local growers: yellow, dark-red, and white.

I'm playing my mountain dulcimer more these days too. It's a peaceful endeavor year-round but seems even more enjoyable right now.

You may know that even though I live in a small town, I love to get out and see the world. 

Due to covid it's been a long time since I physically traveled more than sixty miles in any direction. I was fortunate to take a big, fabulous trip in February 2020. You can read about my nifty trip from Southern Indiana to Key West, Florida here.

Minimalist Me Part 2, by Magdalena Scott

Since I had quite a bit of interest in last month's post about my minimalist home, I thought I would tell you about my office. 

You're assuming one of the things in my office is a desk, right? Gotta be honest here--it's only a desk because that's what I call it, and how I use it. If you saw it in the wild, so to speak, you would think it was a folding table. 

I've had actual desks. But I really love my nice, plain table. 

My big printer sits on one end. On the other end is a filing tray (currently overflowing), and the little alphabetized file box that's supposed to contain some of those papers in the filing tray. There's also a copy stand to the right side of my keyboard and a pretty coaster to the left. I try not to have a lot of clutter on the desk. I find visual clutter quite distracting. (I know, I know, just file the papers already...)

Next to my desk is a little metal cabinet. The top section opens upward and holds envelopes and cards. The six shallow drawers contain all of my office supplies. This piece of history belonged to my parents. My dad kept his Exacto knives and drawing tools in it. My mother's paintbrushes were sometimes in there too. The occasional splotches of paint inside the drawers make me smile.

Also in the office: a vintage office chair, and right next to that, a side chair with a cat bed on it. Of course, Selina wants attention when I'm working. She's quite happy to curl up in the chair next to mine and have a nap. 

A small white bookcase holds writing-related books. (Many of my writing-related books are in ebook format, thus requiring much less space.) A tall cat tree has a view out the window. 

Out of sight in the closet is a two-drawer file cabinet for items I don't often need to access.

And that's it. Simple but functional. Because I find my office peaceful, I'm better able to focus.

Bonus: My desk can serve as a table if I have lots of company for a meal.

Minimalist Me, by Magdalena Scott

As a minimalist, I don't spend much time shopping. When I do shop, the process is complicated by my concerns for the environment. I'm also a list-maker, an overthinker, and, for what it's worth, a Libra (constantly weighing options).

In other words, life is easier if I avoid buying anything except for food and ebooks.

Last summer I finally took all of my photo albums out of the boxes in which they'd been stored for eight years, since my husband's death. In a local shop I stumbled upon an antique wardrobe that had been fitted with shelves. (Reusing = a win for the environment, plus most of my furniture is also vintage or antique.) The wardrobe is the perfect way to display photos in frames, and all of the albums fit inside too. Major bonus--when the doors are closed, nothing gets dusty. 

You'd think I wouldn't be buying another piece of furniture just 12 months later. But a few years after giving away my couch, this spring I decided to buy a daybed to serve as both living room seating and extra sleeping space when I have overnight guests. 

(Another thing about being a minimalist--I prefer items that can serve multiple purposes. Additional example: using pint jars as mini canisters, flower vases, freezer storage for soup, or for homemade iced coffee.)

But back to the daybed...

I lucked into a cute metal daybed at a garage sale. Like the wardrobe, this is a win for the environment, since I'm reusing something that was manufactured several years ago. I ordered a mattress from a nearby manufacturer that doesn't use weird and perhaps not-so-healthful materials found in many mattresses.

The daybed has been a big hit. Drop-in guests enjoy it in couch mode. When I have overnight guests, they sleep in my bedroom on the double bed, and I'm comfy on the daybed's twin-size.

Selina, my cat, is also a fan. She seldom hangs out on the daybed alone, but she and I snuggle together to watch TV. Oh yeah, the snuggle factor is another reason we "needed" this daybed. 

I can also prop up in one corner and work on my current novel, or--ta da!--compose a blog.

Old Photos and a Cover Release ~ Jean C. Gordon

I love old photos and, evidently, so does my granddaughter. For Christmas, she asked if I could have prints made of some of the old family photos I have so she could frame and hang them in her new house. I had such fun with the project, I thought I'd share some with you as part of my new cover release blog post. These pictures are in chronological order, starting sometime in the early 1900s.
