These seven kids are separated by tragedy, but reunited by love. I had so much fun writing this series and the relationships between the foster siblings. Birthday Bash by Pat Simmons

How do you celebrate your birthdays--big or subtle?

I like to think of creative ways to make the day memorable. For example, for my daughter's 21st birthday, money was tight, so I asked twenty-one of her friends--young and old--from across the country to call her at a designated time and say, "Hi Simi, I'm Carol, and I'm number six to wish you happy birthday." After each call, she would have to wonder who would call next. "Hey, birthday girl, I'm Eric, number seven..."

It was so much fun hearing her phone ring and watching the schedule.  That was better than a birthday party.

Years ago, when I hit the big 6-0, I didn't want a party--planned or surprise. I wanted for 60 friends who had touched my life over the years to celebrate with me. In lieu of a gift, they would buy their own dinner at a restaurant we choose.

To this day, that was the best birthday gift ever! Karen was my first childhood friend because our families were friends before we were born. Annette and I became friends in kindergarten. Of course, my stylist was there. Alica had become more like a sister over the thirty years of our friendship. Then there was my teenage party girl, Cookie, who showed up. Can't forget the wonderful ladies I worked at the television station for ten years of my life. They helped my transition from the assignment desk editor to a news writer.

As you can imagine, every guest had a special place in my heart--new and old. My mom, sister and brother-in-law (who passed two years earlier), and brother, who was usually a no-show, came. My heart was full as my in-laws, son, and daughter... making it the best birthday bash ever!

Church folks were on the invite list too. Evelyn--a newer friend-- helped plan the dinner. Finally, Elder Becton, an assistant pastor,  gave the blessings over my life.

It was amazing.

So what do I have planned four years later next month? Somethng low key. Every Friday on Facebook and Youtube, I do a live  show called Fun Friday with another author, Vanessa Riley, and Angela Anderson, an influencer. I'm sure we'll have a good time on my birthday. My sister will join me with the big reveal of my birthday gift on Fun Friday, which we already know what it is...a new kindle. LOL. Birthdays are meant to celebrate life. Every year is a blessing because, since that 60th party, two close family members have passed away. Every day is a gift and I don't plan to waste it. What are some of your best birthday memories?

Happy Chinese New Year! by Camy Tang

How amazing is it that my blogging day falls on Chinese New Year’s this year? That’s awesome!

(Do people say “awesome” anymore? I think my age is showing.)

This year is the Year of the Rabbit. The Chinese zodiac is split into 12 animals, and their years are 12 years apart. My mom was born in the Year of the Rabbit, so you could calculate her age if you wanted to. :)

My humorous Christian romantic suspense serial novel, Year of the Dog, is a reference to the Chinese zodiac because the heroine is a dog trainer. It’s a prequel to my Warubozu Spa Chronicles series, which is set in my birth state of Hawaii. Here’s the book description:

Year of the Dog serial novel by Camy Tang

Marisol Mutou, a professional dog trainer, is having a bad year.

While renovating her new dog kenneling and training facility, she needs to move in with her disapproving family, who have always made her feel inadequate—according to them, a job requiring her to be covered in dog hair and slobber is an embarrassment to the family. She convinces her ex-boyfriend to take her dog for a few months … but discovers that his brother is the irate security expert whose car she accidentally rear-ended a few weeks earlier.

Ashwin Keitou has enough problems. His aunt has just shown up on his doorstep, expecting to move in with him, and he can’t say no because he owes her everything—after his mother walked out on them, Aunt Nell took in Ashwin and his brother and raised them in a loving Christian home. What’s more, his brother Dusty also needs a place to stay after being kicked out of his apartment—with a dog in tow. And guess who the dog’s owner is?

But then Ashwin gets a request from an old friend, Edytha Guerrero, a private investigator who also runs a day spa on O’ahu’s north shore. A strange bit of “vandalism” at Marisol's facility had led her to find a purse belonging to Edytha’s sister—who had disappeared three years ago. Worried that Marisol might be in danger, and finding out that security expert Ashwin already knows her, Edytha asks him to covertly keep an eye on the busy young woman.

Ashwin is reluctantly attracted to the lively, easy-going dog trainer. She reminds him too much of his happy-go-lucky mother, whose betrayal had caused him to keep people at a distance. Marisol sees past Ashwin’s cold exterior to a man who is loyal to his family, unlike her own mother and sister, who only criticize her career choice.

In the midst of Marisol’s disjointed family and Ashwin’s disruptive home, danger begins to circle around them from people who want the past to remain there. Can they shed light on the secrets moving in the shadows?

Year of the Dog is being posted monthly on my blog right now. You can click here to read the chapters so far. If you sign up for my monthly email newsletter, you’ll get an email when each new part is up.

What is your Chinese zodiac animal? (I promise not to try to calculate your age!)

It's Winter by Merri Maywether

We are two weeks into 2023. The Christmas tree has been taken down, although there are a few lingering decorations. We try putting everything away, but that angel statue or the sprig of ivy looks like it belongs where we set it, and it gets left behind.

It is officially the icky side of winter.

Before we moved to Montana, I asked my mother-in-law what she did during the winter. She said, the same thing you do during the summer in Arizona--read.

I laughed, I read regardless of the weather, but I got the point.

Short days, cold weather, and the absence of a community celebration, lend themselves to quiet moments by the fire.

And this year, I've embraced the opportunity.

I've read eight books.

This year is the first year, I'm keeping track. I purchased a moleskin-style journal for the sake of logging my reading. Now that I've started, I wonder why I took so long. Twelve pages are dedicated (one for each month) to the books. I also have pages for quotes that inspire or want to share with a friend.

Goodreads and Bookbub are great tools for sharing what we've read, but there is something fun about pulling this book out and sharing pages. It's personal and doesn't depend on wifi or navigating screens to find a profile.

That, and I keep track of story ideas in the back. :)

The fun of this blog share is knowing that we all are readers. Do you have a system for keeping track of what you've read over the year?

If so, please share in the comments. I got my idea from a comment on a post where the topic was routines. Translation: comments can open an idea for others.

....I just realized, I have a system for my books, but I don't have one for interesting articles...perhaps Pinterest?

New Beginnings by Merrillee Whren

This time of year everyone is talking about new beginnings. It's nice to start the new year with a clean slate with a whole year stretching out in front of us, a year to accomplish goals, maybe goals we failed to meet last year. I rarely make resolutions for a new year. I don't pick out a word for my year. I do have a few goals in mind.

Here they are:

I will write at least one new novel this year. I intend to write the sixth and final book in my Kellersburg series. Right now the fifth book in the series, Hometown Hero, is on sale for 99 cents. You can find the buy links below.

I also want to add a novella to my Happiness in Hallburg series. These novellas feature Christmas and puppies.

My plans for the year also include making my books available in paperback as well as ebook format. I'm also going to try my hand at narrating an audio book. I have the tools, and I'm going to give it my best shot. If you like to listen to audio books, Apple has made several of my Front Porch Promises books available in audio book form using AI technology. You can listen to a sample to see how you like it. You can find them at this link at the bottom of the page.

What do you think of AI technology for audio books?

Happy New Year,

I post this every January because it is so popular.

Happy New Year!

"I'm walking into 2023 with a clear heart and mind.

If you owe me, don't worry about it. You're welcome.

If you wronged me, it's all good. Lesson learned.

If you're angry with me, you've won.

If we aren't speaking, it's cool. (I love you and I wish you well.)

If you feel I wronged you, I apologize.

Life is too short for all the anger, grudges, and extra pain. And we, as people, are not perfect.

God bless us all! Here's to 2023!"

Lorenzo may be sweet as Italian cassata and hot as a red pepper, but planning an anniversary dinner means married, and she needs another disaster like that like she needs another olive oil stain on her shirt.

Booksignings! by Christine Bush

One of the joys of being a writer is the chance to meet readers.  In the past, an exciting way to do this was to take part in book signings.  The pandemic put a big hold on that.  But slowly, the opportunities are emerging again. I'm excited about this.

Fellow writer Penny at a book signing.

The change in the publishing world have sometimes redefined our book signings.  Some folks really prefer electronic reading over print, and so forego the idea of a signed copy of their favorite authors’ books.  Marketing changes have greatly reduced the number of independent bookstores who used to gladly host signings. Libraries, fairs and community centers have joined the list.

Thinking about the future of book signings brings back memories of book signings past. Often for me, they were full of surprises.  Some were humbling.  And still good.  Here are some examples!

My first book signing for my very first book, took place MANY years ago. Titled “Nurse at Deer Hollow”, was a a hardcover edition from Avalon Books. I was invited to a signing that took place at a community fair in my hometown.  I was thrilled, excited.

It was explained there would be a table for “local authors”.  I would be sharing with another local author.  I had no clue who that would be, this being many years ago, before writing groups, and social media. I was absolutely a novice.

So I showed up with my box of books, and my favorite pen.

At the other end of the table was a local author “team”.  A couple.  Oldish.  Sweet.  He wore a Gilligan style fishing hat.  She had a scarf tying back her hair in the spring wind.  Their names?  Jan and Stan Berenstain.  Remember the Berenstain bears? Yes, this couple wrote over 200 well -loved children’s books about the Berenstain Bear family.  They brought eight big boxes of books to sign.

The line was a little uneven. Grin.  I sold one book to a friend who had come to support me.  The line for the B’s stretched around the whole fair.  Within minutes, I redefined myself.  I ended up opening their boxes for them, opening each book to the signing page and stacking them in piles of 20 to speed up the line. We writers help each other.

‘You are an angel,” they said.  “And don’t worry.  Everyone starts somewhere.  Thank you for your help.”

It was actually quite fun, if you didn’t consider my own lack of book sales.  I met a lot of nice people.  And then I sold one more book.  To Stan Berenstain.

“Sign it, please,” he said with a smile.  “I have a first run copy. I will cherish this.”  Nice man.

Fast forward to Chicago many years later, at a national RWA conference.  We would hold enormous book signings, proceeds dedicated to literacy in whatever city we were visiting.  Often there were 400+ authors signing.

In a giant sale like that, it is rare to sell a LOT of books, as there is no way anyone could purchase from ALL the authors.  But the personal contact with readers (and fellow writers) is priceless.  We sit in alphabetical order.   I had a new award-winning book that year, so I was blessed with selling quite a few copies, plus getting stop-by visits from new and old friends.

There was a brand new writer next to me.  “Patricia Cabot”.  She was signing her first book, a historical romance titled “Roses Grow Wild.” The table was pretty quiet.

I remembered the first book signing experience of my own.

“Don’t worry,” I said to her.  “We all start somewhere.  Here, let me buy your book. I will cherish it.”

Which I did.  It was good.

Fast forward a few years later.  National conference.  Literacy book signing.  Alphabetical order. Bush, then Cabot. There she was!  Only there were a few differences.  She was writing under a new name now, “Meg Cabot.”  One of her next books was titled “The Princess Diaries”.  Yes.  Book. Movie deal. Grin.

And now Meg had a line around the entire ballroom.  And so my role changed again.  I helped open her many boxes, lined up her books, and helped her out as she signed. I met a lot of terrific people. I loved every minute of it.  And yes, she bought my book.

I’m looking forward to doing signings again.  If our paths cross, come visit my table, and everyone else's, whether you buy the book or not.  Meeting fellow readers and writers is the main point.  I can’t wait to see you out there!

What’s your take on book signings?  I’d love to know!

Best, Christine

Who Knows What Today Is? ~ Jean C. Gordon

It's National Bobblehead Day. I can say that I don't have any bobbleheads and never had. But lots of people collect them. What I found interesting when I received my NationalDay.com alert about Bobblehead Day is how long bobbleheads have been around.

A Bobblehead Timeline

1700s: "Temple Nodders," the earliest known bobbleheads, modeled after Buddha and other religious figures.

1760s: Bobbleheads make their way from China to Europe.

1920s: The first sports bobblehead featured a generic baseball player.

1964: The Beatles were one of the first sets of human bobbleheads that weren't sports figures.

1999: To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Candlestick Park, the San Francisco Giants gave 20,000 visitors a Willie Mays bobblehead. The giveaway rekindled interest in bobbleheads, which had declined in the 1970s.

2015: The first National Bobblehead Day celebrated and one of two surviving 1961-62 New York Yankees team was auctioned for almost $60,000.

Do you have any bobbleheads? What ones?

Now Available at All Online Book Vendors

After being exclusive on Kindle Unlimited for a while, in anticipation of my next Paradox Lake Sweet Romance in February the whole series is back on other online book vendors--in case you've missed any of them.

Cheryl St.John's Dancing in the Dark is FREE from January 3rd to the 7th.

He’d had his own baby. Without her...

She'd wanted to dance, get married and have babies...all she had left was dance.
He had everything a man could want--except her forgiveness...

Kendra Price had never wanted to be rich, but she’d wanted to be comfortable, which she was. She’d never wanted to be famous, but to live her passion to the fullest and dance, which she did. She’d wanted to marry Dusty, have babies and live happily ever after. It would never happen.

Dusty Cavanaugh has loved Kendra Price since she walked into the school cafeteria and captured a dozen boyish hearts with the sweep of her stormy gray-green gaze and the lift of her chin. College, marriage, and children had been the plan. But then Dusty made a mistake. There had been no road map for life apart.

Is love enough to guide them back?

Fans of Robyn Carr's Virgin River series will enjoy this multi-author series.
