Summer Events by @Laurascottbooks

The weather has finally warmed up here in Wisconsin, but while we can go outside in our backyards, many of the normal events we associate with summer have been cancelled. No graduation parties, no Summerfest, no Festival of the Arts, no large crowds period.

Even if large crowds were allowed, I probably wouldn't go anyway unless it was a family event.

But I have to admit, while I want to stay safe and protect others, this staying at home is wearing on me.

All these years I figured I was an introvert and have truly been content to stay at home. I don't mind spending my time reading and writing, working on the yard and doing yoga.

But not seeing my family except for Zoom parties? That is really starting to bother me.

So I've been trying to think of some fun ways to get together (besides Zoom, lol). I invited my kids to come over and hang out in lawn chairs appropriately spaced out six feet apart on the driveway so we can chat. It was a BYO party, everyone had to bring their drink of choice and their own food. It worked out pretty well, but when it came time for them to leave and I couldn't get hugs, I felt bad all over again.

We did a similar driveway party with the neighbors. (I didn't mind not hugging them, ha!)

But that was about all I could come up with. What about you? Any great ideas for summer events with family and friends that can be done while still social distancing?

Leave a comment and be placed in the giveaway to win a $10 Amazon gift card.

Happy National Hamburger Day - @MagdalenaScott

In the interest of honesty and transparency, I'm writing this blog on an empty stomach. Not my best move.

How was I unaware all this time that May 28th is National Hamburger Day? Sheesh!

Well, I'm sure glad I wised up, and since I'm writing this on May 12th, I should be well-prepared with an appropriate observance, once the Official Day arrives. (It's 5:00 pm and all my lovely Angus ground beef is frozen hard as a rock. Sigh.)

Although I don't eat a lot of red meat, I love a good hamburger. I also love a good veggie burger, but as you probably know National Veggie Burger Day is June 5th.

How will you celebrate National Hamburger Day? Do you like to grill your burgers? Fry them in a pan? Bake them?

What is/are your ultimate side dish(es)?

And how do you top your burgers? The graphic above has a lot going on. I'm not sure I could gnaw a bite off that giant sandwich, but at the moment I'd be willing to try.

I wrote a fun cookout scene in Second Chances, Book 5 in The McClains of Legend, Tennessee series. Widowed Anne is back in Legend after decades away, and many of the McClain clan gather to welcome her, play croquet, and eat yummy cookout food!

In other news, our author cooperative is doing ANOTHER giveaway! Be sure to enter if you're interested.

Why I Enjoy Researching: The Things I’ve Learned By Margaret Daley

Why I Enjoy Researching: The Things I’ve Learned
By Margaret Daley

When I think back over the many years I’ve been writing, I remember the places I’ve been to for research, the books I’ve read, the searches on the internet, the writer’s police academies I attended. When I started writing years ago in the late 70s, I was writing a book about Brazil in the 1800s. The history of the country was fascinating. That’s when I became intrigued about the Amazon and the jungle. I even went to Rio with a friend and had a wonderful time learning about the people and the country. That’s when my love of researching (learning about) different places, people and professions was sparked.

I’m written several books placed in the swamps—Hidden in the Everglades and Deadly Countdown. The above picture is of a swamp. I’ve traveled by boat several times into a swamp. It has a strange, eerie beauty about it. The only problem I had was the snakes—one of my least favorite animals. Even the alligator leaping up out of the water for a chicken the captain held didn’t frighten me as much as the snake swimming in the water.

Since then I’ve traveled to many places around the world, some used in a book and others stored away for possible use in the future. The above picture illustrates the time I learned to scuba dive so I would know what it was like when my heroine did. It didn’t go quite like I’d hoped. During my second dive, I couldn’t go down very far because I couldn’t clear my ears. I had one more dive to do before we were leaving. I got a tip from the dive master about equalizing the air pressure in my ears. It worked. I was able to follow the group. Although I’m glad I did it, after those drives I stuck to snorkeling.

I have attended the Writer’s Police Academy several times. I’ve learned so much about police procedures and the various jobs they do. For instance, every time they go into a building checking for suspects or approach a driver in a car when he was pulled over, it is extremely dangerous and tension filled. I went through what it was like to clear a house, searching for a suspect. In the picture above, I was protecting my partner’s back as we began to move down the hall toward the bedrooms. For a few moments, I walked in a police officer’s shoes and saw all the things that could happen in an instant.

What is something on your bucket list that you want to do but haven’t yet?

Another Memorial Day Remembered

Memorial Day has come and gone once again and, here in Casa Aylworth, we remembered--not just our men who defended the nation in wartime, but all our loved ones who have passed.

Both Roger and I have fathers who served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. His dad worked radar on the USS Aaron Ward. He was part of the plank crew (the first crew assigned to the Ward) and part of the final crew, the ones who sailed it home to be decommissioned after an enormous sea battle off Okinawa. The Ward knew only about one hour of combat, but during that hour took six kamikazes and a number of direct bomb hits. By the end of that hour, the Ward's deck rode barely above the water-line. (Note the Ward pictures, before and after.) My husband has always been hugely proud of his father's wartime service, and rightly so.

My dad always said he never saw battle, that he spent most of the war on a spit of land called FunaFuti (modern Tuvalu) in the Pacific barely large enough to land a plane. We believed him. It was in the aftermath of my parents' fiftieth anniversary party when a group of relatives sat about relaxing that Dad started to talk: "I landed on FunaFuti on my 21st birthday," he began, and he told a story none of us had heard about a full moon and bombers, foxholes, and sailors found dead in them the next morning. When he finished, my mother, wide-eyed, said, "People died on FunaFuti?" We heard more  similar stories following that as he opened up about some of what he witnessed, including the aftermath of some of the Pacific's most terrible battles.

This week we are thinking of both our dads We are thinking about all the good men who, like my father-in-law, fought the good fight if only for an hour, and all the men like my own dad, who put aside their wartime trauma for ten years or fifty years or forever, and we'll remember to vote in the coming elections whether we like any of the candidates or not, simply to honor the fine men, most of them just boys, who died so we might have the privilege of voting.

We are also thinking of both our moms, my husband's only brother, and a granddaughter we lost when she was three months old. We'll pay respects this week to friends and neighbors, and others we care about as well, gone from us, but never forgotten.

We did not attend the Silver Dollar Fair, the annual four-day fair that has been a Memorial Day fixture in our town for decades. Many things aren't happening this year because of the lockdowns, including one grandson's high school graduation and our Golden Wedding Anniversary, coming next month.

"Staying safe by staying home" won't keep us from remembering all those we have loved and love still, and it won't keep us from honoring all who serve so that we might have the freedoms we enjoy.

May you all have a peaceful and pleasant Memorial Day.

NOTE 2: The beautiful new edition of RIDE THE RAINBOW HOME, Book 1 in the Rainbow Rock Romances, is available for pre-order. Updated and polished, this book heralds the re-release of the entire series. Now only 99c. The price will jump to $2.99 on its June 1 release date, so act now for the special pricing.

Whodunit by Pat Simmons

I'm a romance author. I've been writing Christian romance novels for more than 15 years. I’ve never considered another genre------until COVID-19.

For readers who enjoy cozy mysteries, they’re a stickler for the formula, which is mainly a body and clues. The shelter-in-place has increase my husband and my craving for whodunits. Kerry asked why I don't write cozy mysteries.

Easier said than done. "I don't know the formula," but out of curiosity, I checked out the definition on Google: "A whodunit story is a complex, plot-driven variety of the detective story in which the puzzle regarding who committed the crime is the focus."

Aren’t my romances complex plot-driven without a puzzle? I concede. The movies seemed to have at least ten suspects—okay, maybe just five, who all have motives, the means, and the opportunity to knock off the victim before the first commercial break.

What I've learned about cozy mysteries is the main character, usually a woman, is an amateur sleuth and it takes a village to solve the mystery. Plus, tons of misleading clues.

Romance novels must have unforgettable strong, but flawed characters who often clash more than once. They fall in love and the stage is set for a black hole moment or breakup. With the aid of their best friends, they reconcile their differences to somehow guarantee a happy ending, so I can enjoy a good night’s rest, and don't forget about the unforgettable first kiss.

Yeah, I think I'll stick to creating romances and leave the mysteries to Charlaine Harris' Aurora Teagarden and Nancy Grace's Hailey Dean.

Organizing or Obsession by Laura Ashwood

In an attempt to become more organized, I have began to wonder how fine the line is between being organized and being obsessed by organizers. I've tried an embarrassing amount of planners along my quest to find "the perfect" planner for me.

One was too plain, the other too large...so I bought a fancier, smaller one. It was too small. The other was too fancy. Then I thought maybe stickers would be fun. So I bought sticker packs...so many sticker packs. But one of the fun things about having anxiety is getting easily overwhelmed. Too many stickers.

Then there are printable planners and digital planners. So many planners. The photo on the left represents just three of the multitude of planners I tried this year. I'm still trying to make the one in the middle work.

So then I thought, maybe I just need a good calendar. So I started using my Google calendar app on my phone. That's only good if you remember to open the app and look at it. Whoops! So I bought a large calendar to affix to the door in my office. (Have you noticed a pattern here yet?)

I like the calendar but the squares are too small to really use it as a way to stay organized so I put my publishing schedule on it. I mark the days I am actively drafting (not plotting or editing). And yes, April was dismal (hello COVID stress).

Then I decided I needed to try a kanban board.

I color coded my books by genre (pink for contemporary, green for historical). This is on the wall behind my office door.

So has any of this helped me become more organized or has it just identified what might be a planner obsession? I think the jury is still out, but I'm leaning toward the latter.

Do you use a planner or organization system? I'd love to hear about what works for you.

Laura

Spring Flowers

I live in Middle Tennessee. My family spend this past weekend out hiking and enjoying the great weather we were having. The hills are all green and our flowers are so colorful. I try to bring a little of that home with me, as well, as flowers make me happy. I imagine I'll eventually have them poked everywhere in my yard.  I love how they add wonderful pops of colors. How are your yards? Lots of flowers and color? What are your favorite flowers?  Is the weather starting to be wonderful where you live or still bleh?

I added in this photo of one of my strawberry plants, as I get excited about this flower, too, because I know what it'll soon bring. YUM.

USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestselling author JANICE LYNN lives in Tennessee with her Prince Charming, their kids who think they're all royalty, her vivid imagination, an adorable Maltese named Halo who's the true princess of the house, and bunches of unnamed dust bunnies that moved in after Janice started her writing career. In addition to writing romance, Janice is a nurse practitioner, a quilter, an exercise queen, a military mama, and an avid supporter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Do Something Good for your Neighbor by Kimberly Rose Johnson

Today is national do something good for your neighbor day. I had never heard of such a day, but when I saw it was a thing I thought what a cool idea.

Here are a few idea of things you can do for your neighbor.

1. Offer to help them in some way.
2. Wave and smile.
3. Invite them over for a BBQ, assuming you can social distance.
4. Take over a plate of something yummy. Years ago my neighbor brought me a bag of lemons. I've never forgotten that gesture. Those lemons made some amazing lemonade.
5. Keep your yard looking nice. Yes, that is showing kindness to your neighbors.
6. Keep your music low enough that your neighbors aren't forced to listen.

These are only a handful of ways to be kind to your neighbor. What are some other ways you can think of to show kindness to your neighbor?

Fictional Character and Real Life by Merrillee Whren

Back in December of last year, I did a blog post about Montana Memories when I announced the pre-order for my book, A MATCH TO CALL OURS, the first book in my Front Porch Promises series. This book's original title under the Love Inspired imprint was Montana Match because, as you might guess, the book is set in Montana. Notice the photo at the top of the blog. This photo is a real life shot taken by a friend who lives in Montana. The photos of the characters are what I imagined Brittany and Parker look like. It's not always easy to find photos that match the images in my head.

In this book I used some incidents from my own life. When Brittany first meets Parker, he gives her ski lessons. On her first ride on a ski lift, she nearly falls on her face when she gets off. That actually happened to me the first time I rode a ski lift. There is a blizzard in the story, and I have lived through a few Montana blizzards. The little girls in the story talk about watching a calf being born, an experience from my own childhood.

I have used things that have happened to my family or friends in numerous books. My husband crashed an airplane, and I used that in Hometown Dad. When I was in college in Tennessee, a bunch of us drove over to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. My hero and heroine in A Song to Call Ours go to the Highland Games. In A Place to Find Love, I take my characters on a trip to Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands as I relived some of the things we did on a trip to Europe several years ago. When I wrote Four Little Blessings, I gave the reader a taste of my former home, Amelia Island, Florida, showing everything from the beach to historic Ft. Clinch.

I could name a dozen more incidents I have plucked from real life and put in my books. I find it fun to put some real life into my fictional characters. What is something from your life that you might like to see in a book?

Boxes Galore by Cindy Flores Martinez

Here in Los Angeles, we’ve had a stay-at-home order for weeks because of the pandemic. There’s so much I could say about the experience of self-isolating, but today I want to talk about boxes. I mean cardboard boxes. Lately, I feel like I’m swimming in them.

It all started the day I had to shop online because I could no longer go to the store to buy the things I needed. I ordered a lot of items from a major retailer’s website and assumed that everything would arrive in one big box. I was wrong. They began arriving in separate boxes from different locations. The shampoo came in a box from the east coast, the coffee came in a box from up north, the dish soap came in a box from down south, the cat food came from the Midwest and so on. While I set them aside to quarantine them, my neat little home began filling up with boxes.

And they kept coming. A delivery truck arrived every day and brought new items: the aluminum foil, the Ziploc bags, the cat litter, the canned goods, etc.—all in different boxes.

And disposing of those boxes is no easy task. Flattening them, gathering them, and hauling them to the trash—along with the packaging material that came inside the boxes—can be time-consuming!

And it only continues. The cat treats that I ordered for my cat a few weeks ago are now traveling across the country. They’ll be arriving on my doorstep in their own box. Help!

What about you? Have you had the same experience with boxes lately?
