Bargain books for a limited time

From Camy:

Free on Kindle only until December 18! Book 1 in my Christian Regency Romantic Suspense series, Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 1: Archer!

A Christian Historical Adventure set in Regency England with romance and a supernatural twist
Part one in an epic-length serial novel

She met him again by shooting him.

After four seasons and unmarried because she is taller than most of her dance partners, Miss Phoebe Sauber receives the shocking news that she is being callously banished from her father’s estate because he is remarrying. Feeling betrayed by her father and by God, and wanting to escape her family’s presence, she attends an archery tournament with her friends.

But her perfect aim fails her, and her arrow hits a piece of paper held by Mr. Michael Coulton-Jones, whom she hasn’t seen much in society in several years. But strangely, her arrow tears a section of the paper with a partial symbol that looks eerily familiar to her.

He met her again while searching for a killer.

Michael had quit his work as a spy for the Foreign Office when his brother was poisoned. His search for the murderer leads him to Apothecary Jack, a criminal underworld leader with a penchant for poisons, who is gathering a powerful army through an alchemical potion that can give men supernatural strength.

But his path unexpectedly crosses again with Miss Sauber, who saves him from a trap laid by Jack. She and her Aunt Laura, Lady Wynwood, have found a vital connection to Apothecary Jack and the mysterious group he works for.

Now Michael, who had vowed to never again allow civilians to come to harm, must work with a nobleman keeping dangerous secrets, a human lie detector, a chemist, a fellow former spy, and the one woman he’s never allowed himself to get close to.

And it is only this ragtag group that stands against a traitorous organization that could enable Napoleon to conquer the world.

PLEASE NOTE: Like the novels published in Jane Austen’s time, this is a novel in multiple parts. Each volume has a completed story arc, but this is NOT a stand-alone novel and ends on a cliffhanger.

From Josie:

I have a 99 cent Kindle Countdown sale December 14-19 (US only), for my sweet holiday romance, A Chocolate-Box Christmas Wish:

★★ Fall in love with cozy small-town romance filled with delightful characters and brimming with holiday joy.★★

He’s been all over the world. She’s a home-town girl. Can a holiday wish bridge the gap?
In Cora Carpenter’s small California hometown, Christmas is tailor-made for couples. Unfortunately, Cora is a party of one, thanks to a con man who stole her heart, then bilked her out of thousands of dollars.

What’s on her Christmas wish list this year? Nothing whimsical. She’ll take a new vacuum cleaner, thanks—and no dating for the foreseeable future. But when she meets a stranger with a broken-down car, his warm smile and perilously blue eyes almost make her want to tweak that list. If only she could get over the pain and humiliation of her past.

A double whammy of betrayal and a broken heart sent anchorman Patrick Gervez thousands of miles west looking for a fresh start. But the pretty child care provider’s unforgettable amber eyes and deft hand with a set of jumper cables does funny things to his heart—and makes him wonder if she’s a forgotten dream come true.

Except she’s as skittish as a piece of tinsel in a windstorm. And the only way to help her forget her heartbreak, is to convince her to forgive. Especially herself.

The Miracle of the COVID-19 Vaccine...by Kristin Wallace

Today, I'm getting my first COVID-19 vaccine shot. Here in the U.S., most states are using the Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The Astra-Zeneca vaccine is awaiting final approval for emergency use. The fact that we have three vaccines that were developed so fast is a modern-day miracle.

There is a lengthy period of trials and testing here in the U.S., which includes exploratory phases, pre-clinical trials, new drug applications, and 4 phases of vaccine trials. Everything has to be vetted and approved by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It's easy to see how this process can literally take years.

Look at how long it took to develop other life-saving vaccines:
- Polio - Around 3 years, but that was only after decades of research
- Measles  - Around 2 years
- Mumps - 4 years
- HIV - The first trials for a vaccine began in 1987 (and they're still ongoing)

The fact that it took around 9 months for four vaccines to be developed and approved for emergency use is absolutely amazing. A truly heroic effort by scientists and medical experts that will end up saving millions of lives. I don't know that we would've had this result at any other time in history.

Hopefully, it will allow us to return to normal life soon.

Have you been vaccinated yet?

Spotlight on Second Chance Christmas by Kristin Wallace

I'm very excited that my new Christmas romance will launch December 6th! SECOND CHANCE CHRISTMAS first debuted as part of the Sweet Christmas Kisses 5 in September, but now I am publishing it as a single title.

SECOND CHANCE CHRISTMAS is part of my Palm Cove Tales series. It’s the follow-up to the Heiress Games trilogy, which launched this spring. This tale features desperate single mom, Mia Reynolds, the cousin of security expert Damon Grant (who appeared in the Heiress Games books). Mia has been hiding a very big secret about her daughter and now the truth is about to be revealed.

Ten years ago, Mia Reynolds and Winthrop Barrington spent one magical Christmas together. Until lies and manipulation at the hands of Win’s wealthy family tore them apart and left Mia to raise a daughter on her own. Now, both of them have returned to their hometown of Palm Cove, Florida. Once they uncover the truth about what happened, can Mia and Win rediscover the love they once lost and celebrate a Second Chance Christmas with their daughter?

Now here’s an excerpt from Chapter 1…

Mia eventually left Damon and Riley, who were hanging up posters in her new room, while she went back to get the last box from her car.
Serena met her at the bottom of the stairs. “Oh, you haven’t changed yet?”
Mia frowned. “Why would I change now? I’ve been moving and there’s still a lot to sort out.”
“Yes, but you can’t conduct an interview looking like that.” Serena wrinkled her nose. “Not the best first impression.”
Mia gaped in astonishment. “What interview?”
“For your new job, of course.” Serena smiled as though she’d done the world a favor.
“What new job?” Mia looked over at her sister for an explanation, since Serena seemed to be speaking in code.
Chloe grinned. “She has a great opportunity lined up for you.”
“She does?” Mia swiveled back toward Serena. “You do?”
“An old friend of mine recently moved back to town to take over his family’s company and he’s in need of a new executive assistant,” Serena said. “The previous one who worked for his grandfather retired, too.”
“And he’s willing to hire me, just like that? No interview or anything?” Mia asked, amazed that a job offer was being laid out on the table so easily. Even more amazing, the job offer came courtesy of Serena Douglas. “Why are you so willing to help me anyway?”
“Why shouldn’t I help you?”
Because it was Serena Douglas, and she never went out of her way to do anything nice.
Her sister seemed to understand what Mia was thinking because Chloe sidled closer. “I know it’s weird, but just go with it.”
Serena looked over at her. “Why is my job offer weird?”
“You’re not exactly known for your charitable nature,” Chloe said, her voice full of sarcasm.
Serena straightened, her “off with their heads” look in full force. “I’m workingon that, all right?”
Chloe grinned and shook her head. “I know, but you’re gonna have to give the rest of us time to catch up to the new you.”
“This is what I get for trying to be nice,” Serena murmured, before turning to Mia. “Listen, the job offer is real, and yes, he’s willing to hire you. Actually, Win said he knew you, and wanted to help out.”
Mia almost fell over. “Win? As in Winthrop Barrington?”
Serena stared at her in confusion. “Yes, that’s right. You know him? Well, of course, you probably do know who he is. The Barringtons are one of the most prominent families in town. His grandmother’s family is just as important.”
Panic gripped her like a vise. Win Barrington was living in Palm Cove again? He was supposed to be working for some big corporation in New York. That was the only reason she’d agreed to move back home. “I can’t work for him!”
“Well, why not?” Serena began to look insulted. “You have an objection to a regular paycheck?”
Chloe put a hand on Mia’s arm. “Honey, calm down. Win is a pretty decent guy, for a North-sider, and you know Barrington Enterprises is stable. It’s been around forever.”
“No, you don’t understand,” Mia said. “He’s not supposed to be in Palm Cove anymore.”
“Why do you care if Win Barrington lives here?” Chloe asked.
“Yes, I don’t know why you’re freaking out,” Serena said. “Anyway, it’s a little late to protest now. He’ll be here any minute to discuss the job.”
This could not be happening. In town less than a day and already disaster was striking. “No, no, no, no!”
The bell above the door jingled and a tall, dark-haired man in an expensive-looking suit strolled into the bakery. Familiar blue-green eyes found hers and the room spun.
“You!” she breathed.
He gave a half-smile and a shrug. “Hello Mia.”

Did you know today is National Deviled Egg Day? Who knew?
I've never been much of a fan of eggs, so I pass on the Deviled eggs whenever they're on a potluck table.

But I love Christmas. It has always been my favorite holiday. It's a time to celebrate my savior's birth, spend time with family, and think about what's important in life. I love the lights on the trees and houses and having family gathered together to share a big meal and lots of gifts.

I'm also a fan of Christmas novellas and have written a number of them. Here one that recently released:

Old West Christmas Brides

Christmas Romances Filled with the Spirit of the Old West

It is hard for a woman to make a decent living in the Wild West of the late 1800s, and as the Christmas season approaches, prospects for a happy celebration seem dim.

Here's what my story is about:

Unexpected Blessings
by Vickie McDonough

Anna Campbell sets out to deliver two small orphans to their uncle in Texas during December of 1880. Erik Olson knows it’s impossible for those cute little pests to be his brother’s and refuses to accept them—regardless of Anna’s persistence. Little do they know that behind the scenes, Erik’s Uncle Lars and his buddies are doing a little matchmaking, hoping to give the children a father and a mother.

If you'd like to snag a copy, click here.

Here are some of the other Christmas collections I've been privileged to be a part of. Some of these are older and may be hard to find, but you have options if you're looking for a sweet Christmas read.

So how about you? Do you love Christmas? Or is another holiday your favorite? Do you enjoy reading Christmas romances?

A sneak peek at Second Chance Christmas by Kristin Wallace

I’m very excited to be part of Sweet Christmas Kisses 5, our annual holiday box set, which launches Tuesday, September 25th. This year’s set features 9 contemporary holiday tales from USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and award-winning authors. These stories will take you from snowy Maine to Florida, New York to San Francisco, and even romantic European cities like Paris and Florence. You can get all 9 stories for only 99cents.

My contribution is SECOND CHANCE CHRISTMAS, which is part of a new trilogy in my Palm Cove Tales series.

Second Chance Christmas
A Palm Cove Tale

Ten years ago, Mia Reynolds and Winthrop Barrington spent one magical Christmas together. Until lies and manipulation at the hands of Win’s wealthy family tore them apart and left Mia to raise a daughter on her own. Now, both of them have returned to their hometown of Palm Cove, Florida. Once they uncover the truth about what happened, can Mia and Win rediscover the love they once lost and celebrate a Second Chance Christmas with their daughter?

Now here’s an excerpt…

Chapter One

There ought to be a law about Christmas carols bringing up memories a person wanted to forget. Mia Reynolds violently twisted the knob on the car radio, silencing the opening strains of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas”. Unfortunately, the lack of noise allowed her to think too much. Mostly she thought about the mess she’d made of her life, starting with allowing herself to believe that Christmas could be a time of miracles and magic. Starting with dancing under the moonlight to this song, with a guy who’d betrayed her and then cast her aside without a thought. Everything that had happened afterwards was a direct result of that long-ago, forbidden dance.
The devastating betrayal that had broken her heart.
Fleeing town in the dead of night, with her old boyfriend as a cover.
The “plus” sign on that little white stick a few weeks later.
Her outright terror at the thought of being a single mother.
So many mistakes. Up to and including the fact that she who was now jobless and homeless, with a ten-year-old daughter to support, all on her own.
Right on cue, a plaintive voice piped up from the back seat. “Mom, will we everget there?”
Mia’s hands tightened on the steering wheel as she braced for impact. Riley had just turned ten a few weeks ago, but suddenly she sounded like a bored socialite going on thirty.
“Just a few more minutes, honey,” Mia said, hoping they weren’t launching into anotherargument.
A deep sigh drifted through the car, backed by the full force of Riley’s displeasure. “It’s not like I want to be there, anyway.”
“Come on, honey, I think you’ll love Palm Cove,” Mia said. “It’s a great little town.”
Riley’s “oh please” expression met Mia’s in the rearview mirror. “If it’s so great, how come we never visit? You always make Aunt Chloe come see us.”
If only Riley understood that Mia hadn’t stayed away because she hated Palm Cove. She’d had a much more devastating reason for her self-imposed exile, but at this point, she had no choice but to return.
This move was a last-ditch effort to get back on her feet after a series of bad breaks. Mia’s job as a cashier at a convenience store had barely been enough to pay the rent. Then she’d gotten sick, with pneumonia. There’d been doctor’s visits and a three-day hospital stay, followed by strict orders not to move from the couch for two weeks. It’d been long enough for her to get fired from the crappy cashier position. As a result, she’d fallen way behind on the rent and everything else.
Hence, Mia was now slinking back to her hometown with her tail between her legs. Not her choice, but as a single mother, she had to swallow her pride and do what was best for Riley.
“It won’t be so bad.” Mia tried – she really tried – to instill some enthusiasm into her voice, but knew she’d failed miserably.
Honestly, Mia didn’t want to live in Palm Cove, either. For a number of reasons.
Again, it wasn’t a bad town. It was just so small. Everybody knew everybody’s business. It also had a rigid social code, which decreed that the rich folks – known as the South-siders – had little to do with the poor North-siders. Like Shakespeare’s Montagues and Capulets, only without the sword fighting and tragic deaths. However, any interaction between the two sides was frowned upon, and crossing the line invariably led to heartbreak.
Mia should know. She’d attempted to cross that barrier once, with disastrous results. She still had the scars on her heart to prove it. Not to mention a daughter who’d been forced to grow up without a father around. Mia had never told anyone the identity of Riley’s father, and she had no plans to change that. The jerk had turned his back on them both. Still, she’d kept the secret by purposefully staying awayfor the last ten years so no one would see the evidence in her daughter’s eyes. Not that anyone would ever guess the truth. Only him, and he’d made it clear that he wanted nothing to do her or Riley.
Up ahead, Mia spotted the Palm Cove welcome sign.
“We’re almost home,” Mia said, again attempting to sound happy about this fact.
“Oh joy.” So much tween disgust injected into those two words. Mia might have admired the depth of her daughter’s skill if she wasn’t busy having a quiet nervous breakdown.
I hear you, baby girl. I hear you.
The closer Mia got to the center of town, the more her hands shook, until the steering wheel literally began to vibrate. Too many memories. Too much heartbreak and betrayal. Too many tears.
“I bet Aunt Chloe has made something amazing for us to eat,” Mia said, trying one more time to be upbeat.
The one positive thing about slinking home in shame came in the form of an older sister who made a living as a baker. No doubt, Chloe would shower them in delicious treats and home-cooked meals, the likes of which Mia hadn’t eaten since she’d left home.
In the rearview mirror, Mia saw her daughter straighten. “Yeah.”
At least in this mother and daughter were alike. Mia loved food and had the hips to prove it. Besides the ability to create magic in the kitchen, Chloe might be the only person on the planet that Riley still liked.
Mia turned onto Main Street and it was like going back in time. A lump formed in her throat. Despite the way she’d left all those years ago, Mia did have good memories of Palm Cove. Memories of her parents and a cramped, three-bedroom house. Memories of her sister, Chloe, and later, her cousin-slash-big-brother, Damon. She remembered a yard littered with bikes, even if they’d been bought second hand at garage sales. Laughing over dinner. Board games on Fridays and movies on Sundays at the dollar matinee. The Reynolds clan might not have had much money, but as a child, Mia hadn’t really noticed. She’d certainly never seen herself as poor. Not until much later anyway.
Her childhood had been pretty idyllic, but that was all before cancer took her mother when Mia was barely twenty. Before her father had a heart attack and followed his wife right into the grave.
Mia shuddered and forced her mind back to the present. If she thought about her parents too much, she’d collapse in sorrow. At least they weren’t alive to see how much she’d screwed up her life. Right now, she needed to hold it together. For Riley’s sake, Mia would smile and act like everything was fine.
Up ahead, Mia spotted the bakery. “We’re here!”

It's Show Time...by Kristin Wallace

This is an exciting week. My latest book released yesterday!!! Loving You At Christmas, my book from Sweet Christmas Kisses 4 debuted as a single title.

It’s fitting that my Shellwater Key Tales series centers around the Paradise Dinner Theatre because I am taking part in a dinner theatre show this week. Our Opening Night is Thursday.

The play is called ‘How Does A Thing Like That Get Started?’ It’s set in the park of a small town in the 1950s. Basically, the story is about how gossip spreads and the story changes with each successive telling.

Half done to see the contrast
I play Beulah Deleplain and I think the name says a lot about the character. She is a busy body, town crier, and the self-appointed leader. She tends to be a little high-strung, which has become a theme of most characters I play. She’s the first one to pick and spread the gossip, of course, and in the process
takes it in a totally different direction from where the rumor started.

End results in full costume
Tonight was our second dress rehearsal. It’s the first time we’re working on an actual stage and wearing costumes. There’s something about wearing the costume that makes a big difference in a performance. The character comes alive and feels more real somehow.

One of the "challenges" for this play is that I actually need to look older. This means a couple different rounds of makeup. First, I have to do the "aging" part with contour and highlight, plus spraying white in my hair. Then I have to add actual makeup-makeup because my character would absolutely not go out without having her face done. I have to remember the techniques I learned in my old college stage makeup class. Sadly, it's not as hard to "age" myself as it was at 20-yrs-old, and the (me in 10 years) results are pretty unsettling. I tried to get a good picture, but none really captured what it looked like live.
