Lyn Cote's Mom's Nameless Summer Recipe

Image by silvita  Click here to see more of her images.

I am a foodie and I married a foodie and we raised two foodies. When my son was engaged to be married, I asked him what my future dil's favorite foods were so I would make what she liked. His reply; "She doesn't really have any favorites."

I'm afraid that there was a very pregnant pause. The thought that someone didn't have a favorite food dumbfounded me.

My favorite food is of course watermelon. Always has been, always will be. If you want a chunk of watermelon all summer long, my refrigerator is the place to go. We eat at least 1 a week. My brother and I used to go through 2 a week as kids!

For every celebration, our family has favorite foods. Also for every season we have favorite foods.

But my family was outclassed by my husband's clan.

I remember when I married my dh that I was a bit astounded that his family celebrated each birthday with not one, but two birthday cakes and with one or two kinds of ice cream. And then I figured out why!

The Cote family motto is "I'll have a little bit of each." I've threatened to cross stitch that and hang it on the wall of --where else?--our kitchen!

Well, I love my daughter-in-law and my son was wrong--she is a foodie.

So here's one of my favorite summer desserts which was an original recipe by my mom. Therefore it doesn't have a fancy title or any title really. Maybe you'll post a suggested title for me.

Ingredients:
2 small packages of orange JELLO
2 cups vanilla ice cream, softened
1/2 pint of fresh washed blueberries
1/2 cantaloupe, cubed or balled

Prepare JELLO according to package directions. Then while still warm, stir in ice cream, then berries, then melon. Chill and serve. If served as salad, plain. If served as dessert, top with whipped cream.
This is beautiful to the eye, takes advantage of some of the in season summer fruits and it's delicious.
So what should we call it? I need a name for it.

And, while she’d love to have a relationship like the one she lost, the last thing she wants is one with another man who willingly puts his life in danger. Luke Foster is a motocross racer whose track record with women runs short and no-strings-attached on both sides. He’d never seriously pursue a forever-after woman like Bridget. All they want is a holiday week away. Bridget from her well-meaning family’s condolences about her planned Christmas Eve wedding and her memories of a future that won’t be. Luke from his family’s annual critique at which he and his life choices always fall short of expectations. But, under the blue Caribbean skies, anything can happen.

Team Macachek Christmas
Sparks fly from a Christmastime reunion of motocross racer Jesse Brewster and his ex-girlfriend Lauren Cooper. Being thrown together to plan the race team's Christmas party reignites a flame Lauren thought she'd extinguished when she broke up with Jesse six months earlier. Special Christmas Blessing by Lyn Cote

My husband  and I moved to the northwoods of WI in the early 2000’s. On the first Christmas morning I witnessed something called sublimation. Not psychologically but in chemistry. Here’s what I mean. I was standing at the kitchen window and looked out and I saw what looked like snow but special snow I’d never seen before. And the sun was shining brightly--not a cloud in the clear blue sky. Where could snow come from without clouds?  And it was the most beautiful snow I’d ever seen--like cascades of crushed diamonds--veils of them coming down in shimmering waves. I was transfixed. And when the blessing finally ended, the snowy ground glittered like a field of diamonds. I was uplifted, filled with joy. And this happened again on another Christmas morning. Twice--I was amazed.
My husband explained sublimation. Here’s the dictionary definition.
Chemistry.--to convert (a solid substance) by heat into a vapor, which on cooling condenses again to solid form, without apparent liquefaction.
He explained to me that the vapor was being translated into solid form--snow--without becoming liquid first.
Since it happened twice and both times on Christmas morning, i take it as a special gift from God--for all of us who witnessed it. Have you ever experienced a special blessing like this at Christmas? It doesn’t have to be from nature but from another person. Please share here. I will love hearing your special blessings.

BTW, I have a book--usually 3.99, now on sale for 0.99 and just a limited time. Here's the scoop:

What could unite a disgruntled DA and the pretty teacher, responsible for his hung jury?
Perhaps a little boy in need of love

Young and eager, Patience begins her first year of teaching. One first grader, Jackson, sparks her concern. Can she help him start off his school years on the right foot?. A stint of jury duty takes her away from Jackson, and into conflict with Jackson’s dad, by-the-book DA Gil Montgomery. Her “not guilty” vote means he’ll have to try the case again. And she’s upset that her absence had badly affected Jackson, now branded the “class troublemaker,” just what she was trying to prevent.

Gil and his ex-wife’s conflicting parenting styles continue to jeopardize Jackson’s emotional well-being. As irritated as Gil is with Patience, he soon realizes she is the key to helping his son. Patience is willing to help. But is Gil willing to “hear” her as she uncovers evidence for the re-trial that could change his mind about who assaulted Bertha Perkins and stole her valuable antiques?

Don't forget to share your Christmas blessing as we start this special season!

Why Gladiolas are Special to Me by Lyn Cote

The photo above is meaningful to me because gladiolas in late summer bring back sweet memories of my mother. Her birthday was the first week of September. We lived at the edge of town with a farm across the road. They grew gladiolas and had a stand on the highway nearby every year. A dollar for a bunch of glads. My brother and I always saved our nickels and dimes and bought her a bouquet for her birthday. Her friends knew this and gave her the large glass vase in the photo to hold this yearly gift. Now do you have something such as gladiolas that bring back memories of a gift given or gift received? Please share.I really enjoyed hearing from you!--Lyn Cote

My latest romance is now on pre-order for 99 cents. It is book 4 in my 'Opposites Attract" series. Each story is connected but each is complete in itself. Lyn Cote Asks her August Question

Lyn here-- Now for the August question: And what I want to know is: What are you reading? (And you don’t have to say one of my books :-). I want to know what others authors you always buy or check out at the library. Tell me about these authors. I’d like to find a few new ones too! They say word of mouth is the top way that people try new authors, new books. To answer my own question, right now I must confess that though I enjoy a good romance (written by many of the authors on this blog) I'm in a cozy mystery mood this year! A cozy mystery is one where the sleuth is an amateur and usually a single woman. (I especially enjoy the ones that incorporate a romance.:-) Anway if you're interested in my reviews, here is a link to my Goodreads reviews.

In case you're feeling a bit "warm" this sultry summer, here's a book that will take you into the snowy winter with romance and mystery. https://books.bookfunnel.com/weddingromance/szl7h3ftjf A free book too! So let me know what you're reading now and do you ever leave reviews online?--Lyn Cote

Lyn Cote Asks Do Opposites Truly Attract?

ONLY HER HEART

My new book, Only Her Heart, starts a series titled: “Opposites Attract.” So that kicks off this question–Do you think that’s true? In Only Her Heart, Annie and Jack are true opposites. Here’s the tagline for the book. What will it take for a clueless computer genius to notice the loving woman at the desk beside him? And the tagline for the series: Four unlikely couples find opposites do attract even in the shadow of mystery~Do you know a couple that are obviously in this category–opposites? I do. In fact, my husband and I are the prototypes for the well-organized take-charge woman of words and the quiet man who thinks in numbers. No one would have put us together, and we have celebrated over thirty years together.

HOWEVER~Was it true of you and your husband or sweetheart or did it go very wrong? As usual, I will be randomly drawing a few commenters to receive a free Kindle ebook. So please share!-Lyn

Some call him half-breed and all call her a lady. Few in 1825 would judge them equals~

Rafe McKuen, the son of an Osage chief’s daughter and a successful American fur trader turned planter, has one foot in each world. Miss Eve Holcombe is an Eastern beauty with influential relatives. Her father’s unexpected and sudden announcement that they are going West startles Eve and worries her. Why, she asks. But her father has a secret and a plan he won’t reveal. He insists she trust him and what other choice does she have? If she stays in the East, her ambitious aunt will try to marry her off to her aunt’s advantage.

Free Ebook by Lyn Cote--Last Day-March 1st Today!

Never Say Never
By Lyn Cote

A few decades ago when my husband and I became engaged, he said, “I’d like us to live in the northwoods.” I knew his family owned property on a lake in far northern Wisconsin near the southern shore of Lake Superior.
At the time we were living in a suburb of Chicago and at these words-- I “looked” at him. (You wives, know what I mean.) I was not a fan of winter. I wanted to move farther south, not farther north. I replied, “I’m never living north of the Wisconsin-Illinois border.”
HA!
Of course you know where we eventually ended up living---the northwoods in a cottage on that same lake.
Here is the winter view from our deck. Our frozen lake lies in the distance.

So how did this happen to a nice “southern” girl like me?
Well, I fell in love with the beauty of the forest and the many clear, spring-fed lakes. Then life events moved us north. And I must say I wish we’d moved earlier than we did.
I’ve made peace with winter, make do with a brief spring, and love the low humidity, warm--no air-conditioning needed--summers and the long golden falls to which tourists flock to capture the beauty with their cameras. I’m a northwoods woman now. And it comes out in my writing.
I’ve set many of my books in the northwoods. My “Northern Intrigue” series is set in the forest and lakes around a fictional town, Steadfast WI. The series combines romance and mystery. The first book in the series is Winter’s Secret.

So let me welcome you to Steadfast, Wisconsin,
a town with people and mysteries you may never forget.

Winter’s Secret Feb 25-March 1st, its ebook price will be FREE on Amazon http://amzn.to/2kGB7b5
