Summer Reading or Listening By Laura Scott

Wow, the summer is flying by so fast! I'm not sure where the time is going, but I wish it would slow down just a bit.

I've just finished writing the second to last book in my Sullivan K9 Search and Rescue Series. I've recently uploaded the 5th and 6th books in audio format, as well. Which got me thinking. How many of you enjoy listening to audio books?

I never used to, so this is a new era of reading for me. I wish I had listened to audiobooks back when I was working full time and had a 45 minute commute to and from work each day. Think about how many books I could have listened to during that time? Hundreds. Maybe even a thousand! 

Alas, I am late to the party. But better late than never, right? 

For me, working on a screen all day writing, I have learned to embrace audiobooks. No squinting at a page or a screen. I sit back and listen. It's relaxing, except when I'm listening to romantic suspense. Then I'm trying to guess who the bad guy is. 

I now have 28 of my books in audio format with human narrators. It's expensive for me, but I love them so much I think it's worth it.

I'm here to talk about romance tropes! These are those favorite hooks that help push our characters together when they normally would not be in the same room together, so that they may fall in love.

There are many more, but do you see what I mean? These are all ways authors set up their stories to bring their characters together. Do you have a favorite trope? I'd love to hear them.

In all my years of writing (over twenty!) I have used most of these tropes, except for one. Fake Engagement. For whatever reason that one has not worked for most of my suspense stories.

Writing a K-9 Series by Laura Scott

Good morning! I'm thrilled to be here today to talk about my next book. How many of you like K-9 stories? (Raises hand). I love dogs so writing about the amazingly talented K-9 police dogs is so much fun.

If you are interested in reading one K-9 story, how about a series featuring ten of them? And with an over arching mystery that gets solved at the end? 

Doing a project like this is not easy. Each author gets an overview document that briefly describes the characters, the different plots for each individual book and the overarching suspense plot. Audiobooks? Yay or Nay? By Laura Scott

 

Audiobooks? Yay or Nay?

I was a reader long before I was an author, and I have always loved books. Paperbacks that you can hold in your hand, smell the pages, go back and forth between scenes without difficulty. 

Then came the emergence of technology. Ebooks became a thing, and I liked using e-readers when traveling. No more stuffing many books into my suitcase in case I run out, haha.

Audiobooks are exploding in the market, and I will confess I was resistant. But I decided to try listening to a book and discovered I loved it. 

Maybe it's because I'm writing full time these days, which means spending oodles of time at my computer. I have found that I can't read ebooks as easily as I used to. Paperbacks are more difficult too because my vision has changed. (Getting old is not for sissies). These days I devour audiobooks the way I used to read paperbacks. One, right after the other, especially when I find a series I love. A good narrator is the key to a great story, and there have been only a small handful of audiobooks (maybe three?) that I have not been able to listen to.

I'm curious about how you feel about audiobooks? I used to have a long commute to work and back and I wish I could go back and start listening to audiobooks earlier. Although then again, I'm not sure if there were nearly as many available as there are now.

My Security Specialists, Inc. series and my Finnegan First Responders series are in audio now. My August book Scorched Secrets is available in both formats if you're interested in giving it a try. I absolutely adore my narrator, Alex Knox. He does an incredible job on these stories.
