In Loving Memory of my Grandparents - Laura Scott @laurascottbooks

Good morning! Last year when I decided to try writing in a new to me genre (cozy mysteries) I thought about my grandparents. That might seem odd, but I wanted t a way to memorialize them. They've been gone for many years now and I miss them very much.

As I brainstormed the plot for Dogged by Death my first cozy mystery through Crooked Lane Books, I thought it would be great to name the Willow Bluff Widows (AKA WBW's) after my maternal grandmother (Lydia) my paternal grandmother (Harriet) and my great aunt Tillie (Harriet's sister.)

I will confess, that I may have embellished their personalities just a bit. In real life my great aunt Tillie played cribbage but not poker. My grandma Harriet was an amazing cook and learned from her German mother. And Lydia loved to knit, so that part of the story is true.

Oscar, my heroine's grandfather is named after my Grandma Lydia's brother. I couldn't choose between my two grandfathers, lol.

Some of my best memories are spending Christmas with my cousins at Grandma Lydia's house, and two week summer vacations with Grandma Harriet. Looking back, those were some of the best years of my life.

Here's a picture of me, my mom, my grandma Lydia and my daughter Nicole. Four generations of women.

And here's a rather grainy picture of my grandma Harriet and grandpa Frank on their 50th wedding anniversary!

Such wonderful family get togethers with both sets of grandparents!

Does anyone have memories related to your grandparents that you'd like to share?

Ally Winter is going through a ruff patch. The thirty-something veterinarian lost her fiancé, her clinic, and her savings in rapid succession. So when Ally's grandfather undergoes hip replacement surgery, she moves back to Willow Bluff, Wisconsin, to care for him. She arrives home, tail between her legs, only to find sleazy lawyer Marty Shawlin murdered in his home office. And the only witness was Marty's faithful boxer, Roxy.

Quick as a greyhound, Noah Jorgensen is on the case. The good news is, he's the best detective around. The bad news, at least the way Ally sees it, is that Noah is still just as fetching as he was back in high school. He also just happens to have witnessed every embarrassing incident that befell accident-prone Ally--including the fire-ant attack that set tongues wagging and won her the unshakable nickname Hot Pants.

Meanwhile, true-crime aficionado Gramps fancies himself a sleuth, and he is doggedly determined to sniff out the culprit himself...with Ally's reluctant help, of course. Ally has no choice but to team up with Noah--and the irrepressible Roxy--to solve the case while keeping Gramps on a short leash.

Ally had better learn some new tricks, lickety-split. Because if she can't bring the killer to heel, she won't just be playing dead.

  1. Congratulations on you cozy mystery. I remember visiting my grandparents farm and later after they sold the farm to the house they built on the property and the huge garden they had every year with lots of strawberries and raspberries.

  2. Thank you for sharing your sweet memories, Laura. I'm an only child, and always enjoyed get-togethers at my grandparents' house, surrounded by cousins. My mom and the aunts usually congregated in the kitchen, and my dad and the uncles played and sang together in the spare room.
