Vacation??? by Christine Bush

Blog vacation?

I’m enjoying the pictures placed by so many friends on line depicting the amazing sites and events they have experienced on vacation.  Europe. The Grand Canyon. Redwoods. China. Cruise ships. Disney World. Mountains. Beaches. Broadway.

Sigh.

I’m not going on vacation this year, except for attending a few cherished writing conferences. While there might be travel involved, the truth is, life is spent in the conference hotel, networking, speaking, learning, marketing, pitching and brainstorming. I love this, believe me.

But it’s not vacation. It’s actually work.

So no new vacations to brag about.  But still, I find myself having to get over OTHER people’s vacations. Recently, I “held the fort” while family members went away. We were glad to help.  It sounded easy. Grin.

We took care of the dog. Nice, gentle, Type B personality Golden Doodle. Except I have two Type A personality cats. The dog probably now needs therapy.  But he’s still alive. Yay.

Then there were the fish. And specific directions about food and tank care.

And then there was the frog.

And the hermit crab.  He hid in his shell and the only evidence of life was the fact that the big shell moved from place to place in his tank. Not exactly sociable.

The hamster, Patches, was sent, cage and all, to visit my granddaughter’s friend’s house for two weeks. I couldn’t bear the thought of my maniacal cats feasting on her dear pet, so that was an excellent decision.

Did I mention chickens? Chicken feed, plenty of water, and egg retrieval. No escapes from the coop!

We watered the giant garden, and kept the house plants alive.

In fact, great success! We kept everything alive!

And when they all came home, we needed to recupe for days.
And NEXT year, we're going on vacation!

How about you?  Ever “mind the fort” for someone who was traveling? I’d love to hear….

  3. Yes, my husband and I mind the fort for my parents frequently. Thankfully they don't have pets, just plants that this black thumb needs to keep alive. I stress over their poor plants in my care so much that I've called my sister to take a look when they've been away for more than two weeks.

My sister's household has a dog, a fish, and a hamster. I've learned to refuse to take care of all but the fish. The only issue with the fish is that it is a very old, much loved (my niece literally asked me to sing happy birthday to it one year) and I was told by my sister if it should die while they are away I need to go to the fish store and replace it with one that looks exactly like it. Huh? I'm so thankful it hasn't died on my watch.
No vacations for me either this year, just writer's conferences.

    1. The day AFTER they came home, a giant tree blew over in a storm.. I was sad for the tree, but SO GLAD it didn't happen on my watch! Whew!

  4. Christine, that's quite a fort you were in charge of! I check on my grandcats (and grandfish) when my son and daughter-in-law are gone for more than a couple of days. The grandcats love me for my ability to open cans and toss toys, and the fish are always excited to have food sprinkled atop the water. I plan to vacation this fall, but in the summer I'm staying close to home and a/c. ;)

  5. Wow! That's a lot of animals to care for. We've watched grandkids and the grandcat, but we have also had our share of vacations.
