Small Space Decor: A Vintage Desk - by Magdalena Scott

I thought it might be fun to bring you along with me on a shopping trip.

I live in a studio apartment and am in the mood to change things up a bit. I am selling the cool 36 x 36-inch rolling table which has served as my writing table/desk. I wanted something different, that would look both cute and a bit funky.

I also wanted something small, that wouldn't allow distraction. 36 x 36 is a big canvas on which to create a chaos of papers, books, geegaws, and doodads. I've proved myself capable of doing exactly that.

I love repurposing things, and I trust vintage and antique items. They feel reliable, and add coziness to my living space. (My rolling table, while not vintage, has a Mid Century Modern look.)

So shopping for a "new" writing table occurred not in the local big box store or traditional furniture store, but antique and vintage shops. (Oh, the treasures!)

Pictured above are four of the contenders for the role of Magdalena's New Writing Table. Can you see them despite their camouflage? Which do you think I chose? Do you enjoy poking around in vintage shops?

USA Today Bestselling Author Magdalena Scott is a practicing minimalist, having downsized from a 3,000 square foot house to a studio apartment, where her Giant Closet continues to resist taming. When not writing at home or spending time with family and friends, she loves to travel–carry-on baggage only–and is always pleasantly surprised at the kindness of strangers.

    1. Thanks, Josie! I went back to #2 a few times before making my decision.

  3. At first I thought you bought #3 because it's so compact. But then I noticed that #4 has the extension. You can make it longer if you need. So, either one of those.

  4. #2. I don't shop much at vintage shops.

    1. Thank you for your guess, Margaret! Yep, vintage shops aren't for everyone. ;)

  5. #2. I'm not much for vintage shopping because I have a hard time imaging how to repurpose. I've watched those shows on TV and wonder about how the decorators figure out just how something that looks crazy will fit right into the décor. Not my talent. But I'm with you on the carry-on baggage only.

    1. Jennifer, thank you for your guess and your enthusiasm. I almost went for the drop-leaf table because of its multiple uses. Then I decided my desk just needs to be a desk, and when I go there, I do one thing: write. I guess it's a mind game. Wish me luck. ;)

  7. I saw your post on FB with your new desk so I won't respond to that part of your question. :) I do enjoy poking around antique shops. I don't think I've ever bought anything though. It's simply fun to look. :)

  8. Number 2 looks the most practical if it's not too long.

    1. Thank you for visiting the blog, Barbara! Number 2 is a great possibility, but I up purchasing #3, because it "felt" right for me.

  9. Hard to choose. Recently I chose wrong. I have this ENORMOUS desk I have used for years. I decided to "downsize" for a smaller footprint in the room. Found the "perfect" desk (visually), and switched. I was miserable. A week later. The old dinosaur came out of storage, and the new desk went on Craigslist. And now I appreciate it more! Write on!
