Sometimes life flows evenly, but sometimes Not. So.
Much. I just had a week like that.
I’m blessed. I know that. Great kids, great job, great
sisters and extended family, wonderful man in my life, and super friends. There is a lot of good to be grateful for.
But life happens.
Early last week, I received the devastating news that my
much loved brother in law, Ray, had suffered a stroke, and was in the
hospital. He’s been married to my
sister, Cindy, for 40 years, and is as much a brother as if he had been born
that way. I love this guy.
My sisters and I spent the better part of the week at his
side, listening to neurologists, therapists, receiving test results and
plans. He is lucky to have had such good
medical care. It is also a wonderful
thing that he has always pursued a healthy lifestyle, and has strength and
perseverance to work on recovering from the results of the stroke. But it will be a long path, and it’s a very
challenging thing.
But I learned a lot through this. One thing I am grateful for is that I see the
power and beauty of love. I see the
commitment of family and friends, and the acceptance that we all must have when
life hands us a challenge. Together we
can do what we can never do alone.
I also learned that celebrating the small successes breeds
more success. And that life is all about
small successes, in whatever we pursue.
As Ray finds each success, we feel such joy.
Just as Ray’s condition began to stabilize, I received
another phone call. My daughter had gone
into labor, a few weeks early. Another hospital, another life event. Within hours, I was by her side, and able to
hold my new baby grand daughter in my arms as she began her life. Such joy.
Life is like that.
The ups and the downs. The
expected, and the unexpected. And we get
through it all. Together.
That’s why I write about love, and happily ever after
endings. Because ultimately, that’s what
life is all about. Love. I think in the rush of daily life, it’s good
to be reminded of that.
