Earlier this month I had the pleasure of traveling to New
Orleans with my husband. It was my first time visiting the city, and I loved
every minute of our trip. Something that made it special was that my husband
had lived there years before. Back when
he was a fledgling professor at Tulane, he discovered many local haunts and
native eateries that are still there today. What fun it was to have him as my
tour guide, as I indulged in Cajun cooking and experienced the joy of my first
piping hot beignet!
The day we took the streetcar from our hotel in the French
Quarter to the university, it poured. But it wasn’t just rain
streaming from the sky. One large tree on campus was raining Mardi Gras beads!
We snapped this shot on our way to the student store where I purchased a pair of rain boots. Then we slogged off on further
adventures, enjoying red beans and rice at the diner that used to be my
husband’s favorite lunch retreat.
There’s something very special about exploring a loved one’s
past in this manner. It provides insight into who they are now by better
understanding the things they did then. A few years ago, when we visited our daughter
studying in Spain (where I’d spent my junior college year), I was
able to play tour guide for my husband by sharing a unique glimpse of my history.

I love New Orleans! The energy, the people, the food, are all wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Patti! The music was fabulous too. It was such a fun trip! :)
DeleteWhat a fun trip, this sounds. I would love to visit New Orleans. My husband and I attended college together, that's where we met, so we don't have a lot of history apart to share with each other.
ReplyDeleteThat's nice, Helen. Sounds like you've been able to make lots of nice memories together. <3
DeleteI love the chicory coffee!
ReplyDeleteYes, it sure is good! We brought some home with us. :)
DeleteI love New Orleans and have been there multiple times. The last time we went during Mardi Gras, we made the trip to keep an eye on our college-aged daughter who was staying in the French Quarter with some of her girlfriends. We stayed in the Garden District and absolutely loved the old houses.
ReplyDeleteWe missed Mardi Gras, but I've heard that it's fun! Nice that you and your husband have enjoyed the city, and hope your daughter had a great time. :)
DeleteFive years ago my husband and I took a trip down memory lane and visited the church where we were married. We were surprised to see that nothing has changed and were told that it was restored to look exactly the same.
ReplyDeleteHow great, Mona! And very romantic. I'm sure that was special to see.
