Beautiful Things Photo Walks by Kristin Wallace

Secret Place
About a year ago I started a fun photo project. I walk around my neighborhood or anyplace I happen to be and take pictures with my iPhone. I look for little things that anyone else might miss. It could be a scatter of fallen leaves or the roots of a tree. Unusual things, different angles, super close-ups. I am usually drawn to bright colors and patterns. I post my favorites on Pinterest, with cute titles.

I showed my pictures to a friend who is a professional photographer and he seemed impressed. Said I had a good eye, which I appreciate since honestly I have no idea what I’m doing, other than finding things make me stop and look closer.

Thought I would share a few here.

Relax To Recharge

Everyone is so busy with work, family responsibilities and all the general habits, obligations and blessings of life, that it can be overwhelming. We all need time to recharge. One of the nicest things about this time of year is that with the longer days and warmer weather, there are more opportunities to do that. Vacations are great, but sometimes we have to settle for a day trip or even just an afternoon.

I like the longer days and the warm weather because they favor bike rides and long walks, especially with my camera – as least as far as walking goes. There are many great places to walk and shoot in Virginia, but one of my favorite walking places is the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia.

We decompress to recharge whether for work, for our loved ones, or for writing and other creative activities. I think people run on a deficit of energy trying to eke out every last ounce of it because to stop and rest feels like failure or weakness. What we need to remember – all of us – is to appreciate the art of downtime and even the joys of a lazy day.

What do you love about this time of year? What are your favorite decompression or relaxation activities? What are you recharging for?
