The Start of an Interesting Summer

Veronique reclined on her chair in order to put her feet up on the desk. She’d spent the morning helping Mrs. Olms clean her refrigerator, had subbed in for the usual chair yoga instructor, and called three rounds of bingo. Being the do-all director of the retirement housing building meant being flexible. Veronique ended up with all the tasks that didn’t fall under the contracts of the nursing, maintenance, or cooking staff. Every day brought its own challenges.

Expecting one of the residents again—a vet who enjoyed stopping by to tell her his “war stories,” really stories about him and his friends getting into trouble in the air force—Veronique stayed were she was. But when the door opened revealing a handsome man, closer to her own age than her grandfather’s, Veronique fell backward in surprise. She hit the floor on her back with a whoosh, knocking the breath out of her.

I hope Veronique recovers quickly, don’t you?

What’s in a Name This Summer?

I still can't believe that my whole life changed because of a pair of flip-flops. On my way to Myrtle beach, on the little sandy road that leads straight through the dunes and down to the pier, I discovered them. On a display chock-full of colorful flip flops, and this particular pair was bright blue with a golden glittery effect which changed with the light plus they had a pattern on the sole that would leave a trail of flowers behind you. The flipflops just laughed  and said, “Buy me.” 

These flip-flops were made for walking and I wonder who they will run into?

What’s a Man to Do?

Joe McClain came home. Theresa was busy at the stove, and the kids were arguing upstairs--the usual. Today’s mail had been dumped on the counter.

“Hey, Babe.” He kissed his wife’s neck, and she stiffened.

Whoa. Frost warning in the middle of summer.

Theresa turned toward him, her brow furrowed. “Did you see the mail?”

“Uh. Yeah...” He glanced nervously at the pile he’d ignored. A moment later he unearthed the postcard from his brother David and his wife. It showed a breathtaking view of the Caribbean. “Theresa, are you jealous of them for their vacation?”

Lyn Cote Asks: Did You Miss It?

Have you signed up for our newsletter yet? Our debut issue went out a few days before Christmas and featured three great flash fiction stories.

Our Sweet Romance Reads enewsletter comes out three times a year: Valentine's Day, Summer and the December holiday issue.

Sample #1

 Lucky Break Valentine’s Day by Patricia Forsythe

     Sometimes he felt like he’d created a monster.  

    Steven Franklin, known as Red to everyone because of his hair color, stood in front of Franklin’s Emporium and looked up and down Lucky Break’s main street.  Every shop, store, and restaurant on Shipper Avenue was so decorated for Valentine’s Day, it made his teeth hurt.
   
 The town always made a big push to attract tourists for every possible holiday.  As mayor, he’d had the idea and it had paid off, but sometimes the excess just made him tired.  He knew he might feel differently if he and his wife Zoe had another focus in their life, like kids.  They had been married for ten years but had never had children.  They were either at the store working, or pursuing one of Zoe’s many artistic endeavors – ballroom dancing being her latest craze.

    As if his thoughts had conjured her, Zoe came up behind him and slipped her arms around his waist.  “Hi honey.  How was the city council meeting?”

                      The Beauty and the Beast by Margaret Daley

Cara Remington drove into her garage, turned off her engine and sagged back against the seat. She didn’t want to get out and see the foot-long scratch on her new cherry red sports car someone kindly left for her to discover when she came out of the school after a LONG day of teaching. Obviously one of her students was showing his appreciation for all the hours she put in preparing the lesson on Macbeth.
   
What more can go wrong today? TO BE CONTINUED IN OUR VALENTINE ISSUE. I wonder if what more could go wrong might include a handsome new neighbor and his Great Dane? <g>

A Perfect Christmas: Flash Fiction by Shaleen Kapil

Flash fiction is an extremely brief short story, approximately 300-500 words in length. It tells a story in a "flash," a quick scene. I hope you enjoy this Christmas Treat!

It didn’t feel like Christmas. Selena was sad, but she tried hard not to show it. The children would pick it up and want to know why, and they already had enough sadness in their lives. Selena didn’t want to add to it.

Four months ago, Christmas had seemed so far away that she hadn’t really thought of what it would be like not to be at home for Christmas. Her first Christmas away from family. She missed sitting near the fire watching old holiday movies and singing with her sister.

 Still, she wouldn’t have given up this experience, no matter how painful the holidays were. She had followed her new husband, Shane, and his work for his nonprofit establishing schools to India. It was wonderful, rewarding work to see orphan girls like Veejaya come out their shells. Seeing her husband caring for and helping all of these children had allowed Selena to fall even more deeply in love, and she hadn’t known that was possible.

Veejaya skipped into the little classroom. With two long braids hanging down her back and a toothy grin, Selena couldn’t help but smile.

“Miss, miss,” the little girl said, pulling on her hand. “Come, please.”

The little girl led her down the hall to the room that functioned as office, living room, and library. Selana’s mouth dropped open when she saw how it had been transformed. Blue paper snowflakes hung from the ceiling, and diwas, Indian candles in small pots, burned from the tables. A Christmas tree made of strips of newspaper painted green was pinned to the wall.

Shane stood in the middle of the room with a small wrapped box. “Merry Christmas,” he said cheerfully.

Veejaya pushed a button on the remote to the small T.V. and a video player that must have been borrowed. The movie White Christmas began playing, and Selena began to cry.

 “I remembered how much you and your sister loved to watch and act out this movie, so I brought it along.”
            “It’s perfect!” Selena shouted as she rushed into Shane’s arms. She was already planning to teach the “Sisters” dance steps to Veejaya.

Holding Selena close, Shane whispered. “It isn’t much of a gift, but inside that box are adoption papers for Veejaya. If you approve, she can come back with us when we leave in two months.”

This Christmas was better than Selena ever could have imagined. A perfect Christmas.
