Childcare

Who takes care of the children when the parents go to work?
This is such a big issue for so many parents.

My son and his wife hired a nanny. They were lucky to find a middle aged woman who came from Ukraine to work as an interpreter and knew English fluently. Natalia too care of my granddaughter when the little girl was only three months and her mommy had to go back to work. Two years later when the family welcomed a baby boy, Natalia was delighted with her second little charge. Three years later, both children attended school. Their loving nanny bid them goodbye and returned home. She still corresponds with the parents and grandparents and often watches "her" children over Facetime.

While my daughter-in-law was lucky to find the perfect babysitter for her children, my daughter went through all type of difficulties. I stayed with my first granddaughter for six months and then the parents put her in a daycare center. Three weeks later the baby was sick. For a better long-term solution, my daughter hired an au-pair student from Peru, but the young woman fell in love with a local young man and left them to get married. A new au-pair came from South Africa and stayed only six months. A nanny replaced her. Unfortunately she got sick and had to leave, and the children were enrolled in daycare again. Eventually my daughter moved to Florida to be next to us and I took care of my granddaughters.

How do young parents manage to provide reliable care for their young children when they both work? Please share your thoughts.

In my story, twin toddlers are left with a teenager who is on her phone while babysitting and...

  1. This was a very difficult problem for us when our child was a baby! That was 37 years ago & I know it has become worse. I just returned home in late June from helping with my third grandchild for eight months. Due to my health issues, I cannot go back for several months now. As a young mother in 1980, I & my daughter were kicked out of her daycare center because they knew they did not meet my standards! They actually did not meet the state's standards of care & I had reported them to the state! They were investigated & problems were found! I was interviewed for our local newspaper's article for childcare problems for working parents back then!!! As a nation, we need to assist working parents & quit ignoring the urgent need for quality, enriching, & loving care for all USA children!!!

  2. When my girls were younger and I worked after school they either stayed with grandma or another family from our church. Now that I have grandsons. My daughter and her husband work and I babysit my grandson every day all day. My other daughter doesn't work but when they go out for date night or anything else I watch my other grandson also.

  5. I know child care is a big thing for my niece and her husband, with her two young girls. She first had a nanny when she went back to work, but the girl quit on her just before summer let out. With the help of family we were able to help with the girls. Once school started, she had after school care for them. But now she and her husband both have jobs that are very demanding, so she got a nanny/housekeeper works just afternoons. It takes a village to raise a child these days. The family still helps out when they can.

  6. You brought up a good point, Mona. Good childcare for young children is very difficult to find. Wonderful that you can watch your grandchildren and help out your daughter. Plus, you get the added benefit of seeing your grandchildren grow up---a win, win situation all the way around.
