Author weekends and autumn colors... by Roxanne Rustand

Writing entails a solitary life sitting at a computer...whether one is holed away in an office, sitting in front of a crackling fireplace with a laptop, or in a coffee shop.  It takes concentration, and perseverance, and faith to keep going even when the words don't want to come or the characters are simply not cooperating.

So it such a pleasure to get away and spend time with fellow authors...people who fully understand what one is going through, not only with the process of writing, but also in this rapidly changing world of publishing.

The new anthology by a group of Sweet Reads authors is certainly a case in point regarding the publishing end of things.  Ten years ago, I wouldn't have dreamed it possible to make a success of self-publishing!  And yet Sweet Christmas Kisses is doing exceptionally well on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other e-book formats.  Which is so exciting to see!

Have you had a chance to download it yet? With fourteen contributing authors and fourteen novels to savor, its 1600 pages will keep you busy for a while...but what fun!  And still, an amazing bargain at 99 cents!

This weekend is my favorite time during every autumn. I'm
writing this from up in the Lakeland Area of Northern Wisconsin, where Pat Burket-Roby, a friend and food writer/photographer, and I have come to visit Sweet Romance Reads author Lyn Cote and her family.

We have such fun!  We explore the region for interesting events, garage sales, and fun places to eat.  We talk about books and photography and writing.  Sometimes, we brainstorm new book ideas or the current effectiveness of promotional tools.  But mainly, it's a wonderful time to kick back with old, dear friends and enjoy every last moment.

This year, the autumn color peaked a week before we arrived and high winds accompanied by heavy rain tore away most of the vivid scarlet, vivid orange and yellow leaves.

There still were some beautiful colors to be seen...but the weather and nature's glory aren't the highlight for me. It's being with dear friends whom I don't get to see nearly enough!

What are your favorite get-aways?  Do you still get see old friends very often?

Best wishes to you for a beautiful autumn!

  4. I enjoy fall get-away trips to the Oregon Coast. Although, like you, the first high winds and rain will knock the leaves off the trees. I'm enjoying the boxed set of Sweet Christmas Kisses!
