Do You Like Daylight Savings Time by Margaret Daley

Daylight Savings Time

Do you like Daylight Savings Time? Would you rather not have to change your clock two times a year?

Soon we will be springing forward in March here in Oklahoma. I know there are some states that don’t move the clock time twice a year. I wouldn’t think that changing a clock one hour forward or backward would be too big a deal, but every time it takes my body several days adjusting to the change.

Your body does best when you consistently sleep about the same time because if you don’t it affects your circadian rhythm (which affects your body secreting melatonin, a sleep promoting hormone). Your circadian rhythm also affects your alertness, so if you usually wake up at 7:00 a.m. and you do, your body still thinks it’s 6:00 a.m. and isn’t quite ready to get up.

The changing of the time often causes a person to lose sleep. People tend to eat more and not exercise as much while they adjust to the difference in time.

There are a couple of things you might try to help with this time change. A few days before the change, begin with fifteen-minute increments going to bed and rising from sleep, so by the time you make the change, it won’t be as much of a shock to your system. Also, you should not use devices like a cell phone (playing games, etc.), an iPad and other types of technology within two hours of going to bed.

Don’t forget to change your clock come this March 8th when time springs forward.

  1. Margaret, I am *not* a fan of daylight savings time. Thank you for the tips on how to deal with it! Congratulations on your upcoming release, and thank you for the book bargain. Have a great day!

  2. I've never been a fan of DST. It takes me a whole week to adjust not to mention how much it messes with my dogs' internal schedules.

  3. I grew up in Texas and remember showing up for Sunday school one morning and no one was there. Turns out, my grandmother forget to set the clock ahead and I was an hour early! But now, I live in Arizona where we do NOT do daylight savings, so I never have to remember to change the clock. Yeah!!!!

  4. In Arizona, we stay on the same time all year round. When we first moved here, I thought I might miss the longer days in the summer. I haven't missed it at all, maybe because with the really hot summer days, we're ready for the sun to go down.

  5. I don't care if it's Daylight Savings or standard time, I just want it to stay the same year around. I hate changing time. I'm going to try your 15 minute increments tip. It takes me weeks to adjust to the time. Did I mention how much I hate changing time? ;)
