Family. To me, family
a vital part of life.
Families come in many different varieties, and get formed in
many different ways. What’s your family
like?
My family is
big. And when you add “extended family”,
it’s actually enormous. It’s often noisy. And it joyously includes all types of
people.
And pets.
Pets are an important part of my family. Taking an informal roll call the other day,
we have included cats, dogs, hamster, fish, chickens, birds, turtles and an
iguana. Most have come the rescue route.
Currently I have cats, rescued years ago from a young family
whose toddler had developed severe allergies.
And I seem to have part time custody of my daughter’s retired service
dog, who likes hanging out at our house (despite the cats).
What is it about our pets?
They are comforting, entertaining, and a heartwarming presence. They don’t care about politics, ugly gossip,
or keep count of the number of Christmas cookies I’ve eaten. They just love. We should all take a lesson from this.
The grand kids buy them Christmas presents, talk to them like
they are going to talk back, and instinctively cuddle them on the couch. It feels great to see this.
Somehow, pets seem to bring out the best in us. Warmth, care, companionship. So it breaks my heart when I hear of animals
abused or neglected. And there are so many who need help.
My newest novella, “Hannah’s Heart”, deals with the loving
folks who word tirelessly with animal rescue. And of course, find love along
the way! It’s a story close to my own heart.
I hope you love it.
And I hope you continue to be inspired to do what you can, when you can,
to help those animals at risk find their ways to a loving family. It’s
important.

DeleteI love your post, Christine, especially the line about our pets not keeping count of the number of cookies we've eaten. We have a shih tzu, and his name is Henry. He is definitely a part of our family.

DeleteLove the post. I've always had pets usually dogs until a stray cat adopted me. From him we took on two more stray cats (book on months old).

DeleteOne of our cats lost his battle with multiple health issues last month. We still have other sweet cats here who are also adjusting to their missing friend. All are rescues, including a purebred who came from a breeder who had to close her cattery quickly due to family health problems that frequently kept her away from home. A good mutual friend arranged for me to take one of the cats. Yes, pets are family - the Siamese mix in my lap fully agrees with that statement! (If any of mine are keeping a cookie count, it would have to be my red tabby. He would be counting one for you, two for me!

DeleteOver the years we've had dogs, cats, hamsters, birds, and fish as pets. The last time we had a pet was 7 years ago. We gave our daughter back her cat when we moved to AZ. We'd had him on loan for 12 years. He lived almost another 5 years, and we got to visit him or cat sit when they went on vacation. Now the granddaughters are begging for another cat, but their dad became increasingly allergic to the cat over those 5 years. So they have lots of stuffed ones, and we have no pets now because we travel a lot.

DeleteWe have the sweetest little Maltese named Halo. My husband is allergic to dogs but does great since she doesn't shed. She is definitely part of our family. :)
