Traveling ~ Recycle, Renew, Reuse by Donna Fasano @DonnaFaz

Years ago, I traveled to the south of France with my husband. We visited Antibes, Nice, Menton, La Grande-Motte, Montpellier, and other lovely little towns along the Mediterranean Sea. I have visited several towns and cities in Italy, and I’ve also visited the UK and Brussels, Belgium. One of the things that struck me on these travels was that everyone brought their own reusable shopping bags when they went to buy groceries. I wondered why we didn’t do that in the US. So when I returned home from that very first trip, I started taking reusable bags with me to the grocery store. Back then, cashiers didn’t like it when customers brought their own bags to the store because it slowed them down. I can’t tell you how many annoyed looks I received back then. But I’m happy to say, this attitude is changing!
Sandia Mountains, New Mexico

I visited Albuquerque, New Mexico last month. (I rode an aerial tram to the top of the Sandia Mountains. What a stunningly beautiful place! Please see the picture to the right.) I learned that the stores in Albuquerque charge 10¢ for each bag that is provided by the grocery story. I was very pleased that businesses in the south west are strongly encouraging customers to bring in their own bags. I am hoping businesses all over the country will soon do the same.

Did you know that there are some reusable bags that are made of recycled soda bottles? I love these bags I found on Amazon. You can even find light-weight reusable produce bags. How do you feel about recycling, renewing, reusing? Would you consider bringing your own reusable bags when you go shopping?

  1. Hi Donna! Was visiting my cousin in Germany in 1996 and he was amazed I didn't have a reusable shopping bag. Since I often shop at Aldi, I always have reusable shopping bags in both cars. They are handy for all sorts of things. I have visited England, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland and Poland. Switzerland around Interlaken is beautiful. Small villages nestles on hillsides and crystal clear inland lakes with delightful hospitality and cuisine. Happy Holidays

  2. Here in NYS, we are soon going to have to bring our own bags or pay for a paper bag. I've been using reusable bags for as while now.

  6. I take reusable bags to the grocery store, which is most of my shopping. I leave them in my car, too.

  7. I like reusabke bags more because they can put more in them. Less carrying for me! The problem is remembering to get them into the store.

  8. The bags made from recycled plastic are great. I didn't know they made them. I'm guilty of choosing reusable bags based on how they look, like because they have a pretty Eiffel Tower scene on them. I'll have to rethink my decision.

  9. The city in which I live mandates the businesses charge 5 cents per a paper bag, and plastic bags have been banned. We have been bringing out own bags to the grocery store and places like Target for years--long before this law came to be. It's a bit more challenging to remember to bring one to the mall though. When I go to the mall, I don't like to carry around an empty bag, and I don't have a cart to put it in.

  10. I didn’t know that Jean!! Thanks!! I’ve got a bunch of material bags, so that won’t be an issue.

  11. The most beautiful place I’ve visited, besides my own property in the lower Catskills was when I was 3 and we went to Niagara Falls and Canada. I also loved Stowe & Waterbury VT which I visited as an adult. But the plastic bags didn’t play a part then. I actually “donate” my plastic ShopRite & Walmart bags to two church groups. Our own church does a free clothes giveaway on the third Saturday of the month, and another church has a thrift store. :)
