Memorial Day: A Time We Give Thanks By Margaret Daley

Memorial Day: A Time We Give Thanks
By Margaret Daley

I was a teenager during the Vietnam War and many people I knew ended up fighting over there. One soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice was my older brother’s best friend, Mac. He was the older brother of one of my good friends. His death touched me deeply. I remember when I went to Washington D.C. and searched for his name on the Memorial Wall.

What was so sad during the Vietnam War were the mobs who used to spit on them and shout awful words because these men returning from war fought for our country. Back then there was a draft, and you had to register when you turned eighteen. I’m not talking about the politics of the war, but about respecting the men and women who fight for our country. Memorial Day is a day to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers who fight for our freedom. And thankfully our soldiers today are shown the respect they deserve.

  4. Thank you for this reminder about Memorial Day, Margaret. Always appreciated. Our family visited the wall in DC, and last year, the traveling version came to my town. Folks of all ages visited, some making the trip at night too, because the experience was moving at a different level. Teachers from K-12 took students, and local volunteers assisted the historians who travel with the exhibit (3/4 scale version of the wall, plus video and other historical displays in a tent a little distance away). I was surprised again, how moving it is to see all those names, even though I wasn't looking for someone I knew.
