Friends ... by Christine Bush

If it seems like I’ve been a little bit missing from public life, it’s true.  I lost my dear sister, Denny, a few weeks back.  She’d been sick for a while, in fact, she’d had a lot of struggles through her life.  I believe in God and heaven and that she’s with Jesus, and so did she. She’s in a ‘better place’, and out of pain. But that doesn’t take away the feeling of loss and grief to no longer have her in my life.

I have had many painful losses through my life, but this one literally bowled me over. I’m usually a coper. But this time, I was flat-lined.

She’s been my big sister forever, and a dear, dear friend. I miss her so!

As I look at this loss, what’s getting me through this time? Love and prayers, of course, but in my daily life, it’s my friends.  There is something so awesome about good friends who know you, who know what hurts, and how you will react, and what will help, and what will not.

They know when to comfort you, when to leave you alone, and when to have your back. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without them.

I’m blessed that I’m actually related to some of them.  My husband is my dear champion. We’ve only been married a year and a half, but he’s sure risen to the occasion of providing hugs, support (and sometimes chocolate cake, I admit). And minding and driving the grands whenever necessary.

I have two more sisters, and we have shared our hearts and our loss for hours. And my kids, who dearly loved their Aunt Denny.

But I also have “family of choice friends” from church, school, my writing communities and other facets of life who have listened, hugged, or just understood on those days where I just couldn’t keep my ducks in a row with the grief.

It’s getting better day by day.  I know the grief will “leak out” for a long time to come, but at least I’m starting to care about what day it is.  (And when I forget, a friend gently reminds me. Grin)

Today, I starting writing again. I’m finishing up a new novella called “Hannah’s Heart”, watch for it in the near future.  And I’m writing this blog.  All good steps.  Writing my stories (and reading those uplifting tales penned by my friends) awakens hope and joy, for sure.

Thanks for being my friends and story cohorts, as we travel this sometimes rocky path called life together! You all mean so much to me!

Who are the friends in your life who hold you up in the dark moments and celebrate with you in the bright ones? I’d love to hear!
                                                                          Love,  Christine
