Apple Season by Cindy Flores Martinez

Here in a suburb of Los Angeles, the arrival of Fall means hot Santa Ana winds that bring 90 to 100-degree temperatures during the day, and cool, dry air at night.

About an hour away, a tiny town called Oak Glenn exists with quaint buildings and apple groves. During the Fall, the crowds gather there to pick apples from the trees and buy cider and other apple flavored food and drinks.

Julian is also nearby, which is like Oak Glenn, but even smaller. The times I’ve spent in those towns helped me write my Kindle Worlds story, Love’s Second Chance, for Melissa Storm’s First Street Church Romances. I could vividly imagine the fictional apple grove town of Sweet Grove, Texas where the story takes place because I’m so familiar with Oak Glenn and Julian.

While writing the scene where my characters are at the Cider Mill in Sweet Grove, I reflected back on the time I visited the Apple Farm Inn in San Luis Obispo to the north of here. Watching the old watermill wheel turn beside the building, exploring the gift shop inside, and listening to the slow-moving stream outside was unforgettable.

As I wrote my story, I often wished Sweet Grove was real and that I lived there. You can read all about it in Love’s Second Chance. I hope you enjoy your time there too!

  1. There are lots of apple orchards here in the Hudson River valley and more all along Lake Ontario and Erie. I love that this give us all kinds of varieties of apples. Last week I bought a new-to-me variety, Ginger Gold.
