Stress Breaks – Crafting Fun by Aileen Fish

The big thing in relaxation for adults these days is adult coloring books. I bought several a few months back so I could focus on something to clear my head, if that makes sense. Have I used them? I honestly am not sure where I put them!

Instead, I bought construction paper, glue sticks, scissors, watercolors and washable markers. Now when the princess comes for her weekly visit, I cut girls and blankets and pillows and toys and she glues them into little scenes.

She loves to paint, too. She’ll do a combination of paint and markers on the people to give them a face, although she asks me to make the smiles.

It’s much calmer relaxation than swimming with her, although I miss the water. I was very surprised when she didn’t even ask to swim last time she was here. After lunch or snacks she would say “I have to work now.” That’s what Grandma here says when she can’t bring the princess over to play.

Thankfully her mom is easy going and doesn’t care if our princess comes home a little worse for wear. I worked so hard last week to keep her from getting paint on her shirt. Instead she had blue arms, blue ankles and a blue spot on her forehead. We couldn’t figure out how she got the ankles and not her clothes. She’s quite talented!

I imagine no matter what she and I do together, it will relieve any stress I can drum up during the week.

What about you? Do you have a routine or hobby that lets you shut out what else is going on in your life?

  1. Crafts are a fun stress-reliever and I enjoy baking, too. How fun you and your granddaughter can have such fun together!

    1. It's too hot here in the summer to bake, but we've made sugar cookies in the past.

  2. I wish crafts were stress-free for me, but I get so caught up them- obsessing that everything go exactly right- that I forget to just have fun! I used to love to sew clothes- especially baby outfits and crib comforter sets so maybe that's where my angst started as they were always gifts and had to perfect. After reading your post I'm inspired to try again :) Thanks!

    1. I am supposed to be sewing, too. I even thought I could work on simple dresses while she crafted. That didn't work so well.

  4. I have printed some adult coloring pages. My teenage and my pre-teen. We also bake, do crafts, walk and garden together. My pre-teen daughter and I do nails. It is great to spend time with anyone that is younger than you, if it is your child or grandchild, even better.
