Car Shopping by Christine Bush

Think of your favorite book.  What kind of car does the heroine drive?  What kind of car does the hero drive?  Of course, I’m asking about fairly contemporary books, your historical character’s horse is a totally different situation.

What does a car say about a person?  Does she drive a minivan?  A convertible high end sports car? A loaded Ford truck?  What color is it?  Shiny and black?  Bright candy apple red?  A junker with different colored doors and dented hood?

The choice of a car can be a result of circumstances, or it can be one of personal choice.  Does it say a lot about our characters?

What kind of car do YOU drive?  What does it say about you?  What matters to you? Is it a statement of personality, of status, of priorities?  Basically, I think I just care that the car runs well,  stops well, is affordable, and fits whoever it is that I am currently carting around.

But today, I’m in the process of choosing a replacement car, and suddenly I have to think about these things.  And I’m having lots of conflicting thoughts.  New?  Used? Serviceable or make a statement? Break the bank, or find a bargain? What matters to me?

In life, I only make these decisions occasionally.  Since I write a lot of characters, I make those decisions a lot in my stories, and I DO use those details to help define my characters.  I think I need to think harder about my own personal decision here.

The thought makes me smile.  I’m picturing myself in a 350 shiny Ford Pickup, wearing a giant cowboy hat.  Or in the little bright red Miata, with no room for car seats. Or, sigh, the minivan.  Time to choose. I’m not sure I’m as exciting as some of my characters.

What do you drive?

  1. I drive a Honda CRV because its practical with lots of space and comfortable. I'm definitely not a sports car person. I like high vehicles so I can see over the British hedges.

  2. Fun post! I drive a crossover because I like the flexibility it gives and extra space for hauling a variety of stuff. If I could go to the car lot and purchase any vehicle I wanted today, I'd drive home a brand-new four-door pickup.

  3. I say go for the pickup! Plenty of room for the car seat and plenty cool ;) Since I don't like to drive, my dream car would be a limo- lol. Luckily I have a husband who loves to drive and we own an SUV.
