Decisions, decisions...developing a book cover .....Roxanne Rustand

The writing process is challenging, but it also brings me joy, and finding the right cover is so interesting!

I would never attempt creating a cover on my own, but just finding the right elements to include and working through the tweaking process is fascinating to me.

For a romantic suspense, for instance, the cover needs to convey an element of jeopardy.

If a cover misleads a reader and they are later disappointed in the type of story they bought, they won't be happy!

I will have three more books out this spring in my Montana Series five-book series.  FINAL PURSUIT  (book #3)  will be released on February 22nd. The cover is completed--including the dog in the story.

For my author brand "Faith, family and four-footed friends--a life in the country" I try to always include an animal appearing in the story. Hence,  the Border Collie.  :)

The cover draft for FINAL ESCAPE (Book #4,  releasing  April 5th) is almost complete--except for finding a spot to include the Bernese in the story.

The cover artist and I are debating about placing him on one of the boulders, and also debating about gradually brightening the color of the lower half of the cover, so the boulders and the rushing water are more clear.

What do you think? I would love to hear your opinion! Leave a comment, and you'll be in a drawing for a free e-copy of FINAL CHANCE (Book #2 in this series.)

Wishing you all the best,

Roxanne

Naan Recipe (without Yogurt) by @Donna_Fasano

Using a few simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand, you can make delicious, light, and chewy flat bread. Many Naan recipes use yogurt, but I rarely have plain yogurt in my fridge. So, I’ve come up with this recipe. I hope you’ll give it a try.

Naan Recipe

Ingredients

·        1/3 cup warm water

·        1/2 teaspoon sugar

·        1 teaspoon instant yeast

·        2 cups all-purpose flour

·        1 1/2 tsp salt

·        3 tablespoons almond milk or plain milk

·        1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

·        1 tablespoon olive oil + some extra for brushing

Instructions

1.    In a mixing bowl, combine water, sugar, and yeast. Cover and let it stand for 10 minutes at warm place.

2.    In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, milk, vinegar, olive oil, and the yeast mixture.

3.    Stir to combine until dough comes together. Knead for about 5 minutes until dough is smooth and silky.

4.    Divide the dough into six equal pieces. Roll each piece in a ball. Cover dough balls with a damp cloth and let rise for 1 hour.

5.    Heat a large skillet over a medium-high heat.

6.    Use a rolling pin to roll the dough balls into flat ovals that are 1/4-inch thickness. Place an oval into the heated skillet. Cook the Naan bread until it begins to bubble and turn golden. Flip the bread and cook the other side. Brush with some olive oil. Repeat the process until all 6 of the Naan is cooked. Serve warm.

A Sweet Romance on Sale and a Sweet Recipe by Vickie McDonough

I can't believe it's already February. January flew by at warp speed. We just experience a frigid blast of winter with ice and snow, as I'm sure many of you did, and that has me wishing for spring with its warmer temperatures and pretty flowers.

While we wait, I've posted a fun Valentine recipe below that sounds delicious. I haven't made it because we have few desserts since my hubby has diabetes, but this looked to yummy to not share.

I also wanted to tell you about The Prodigal's Shotgun Wedding, which is on sale for just $1.99.

A prodigal’s hope for a happy homecoming is derailed.

Clay left home after his brother’s death—a death for which he was responsible. After years away he’s finally returning, hoping for reconciliation with his father. But when the stagecoach he’s riding in wrecks and he is injured, he finds himself in a fight for survival.

Jolie is fleeing a nightmare situation. She desperately hopes becoming a mail-order bride doesn’t land her in a worse place. When the stage crashes and she spends the night alone with a wounded man, she wonders if her intended will still want her. If he doesn’t, what will she do? She has no money and nowhere to go.

The Prodigal's Shotgun Wedding is available on Kindle.

Cherry Almond Mousse Pie

1 jar (10 ounces) maraschino cherries, drained
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 cup cold water
1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped
1/2 cup chopped toasted almonds

Chopped chocolate, optional

Directions

1. In a small saucepan over low heat, cook and stir 1/2 cup milk and the chocolate until chocolate is melted and mixture is thickened, about 4 minutes. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon extract. Pour into pie shell; set aside.

2. Set aside eight whole cherries for garnish. Chop the remaining cherries; set aside. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Gradually beat in water and remaining milk. Beat in pudding mix and remaining extract. Fold in whipped cream. Stir in chopped cherries and almonds.

3. Pour over pie. Chill for 4 hours or until set. Garnish with whole cherries and, if desired, chopped chocolate.

Lyn Cote Shares Her Most Memorable Birthday!

To say that day was a mixed bag is putting it mildly.

February is my birth month (not telling you the year '-). The memory of my brithday many years ago when my kids were grade-schoolers always comes back to me around this time of year.

It was a Sunday, a wintry one in Iowa. The day began with the anguished meows of our cat Shadow, a mixed Siamese who was a stray we took in the year before. (I take after my mother who was on the strays' list of soft touches. '-)

Anyway my son had picked her up and she tried to jump down but instead one of her claws had become stuck in his pajama shirt. It actually had pulled the "finger" out of its joint. I unhooked her and she literally writhed on the floor in pain. You can imagine my emotions. Our son was devastated so I didn't scold him.

I called our vet hoping I could leave him a desperate message. Wonderfully he answered my call. We still had to get dressed and he said he was going to early church and would meet us in an hour at the office. So we dressed and dropped the children off at Sunday School and headed to the vet. Shadow was in terrible pain but in my arms, she suffered in silence.

At the vet's office, the vet anesthestized her and pulled the 'finger' back into place.

But then he couldn't revive her! I thought, Oh, Lord, please. Our son would be devastated if Shadow died because he picked her up.

The vet worked on her for FORTY-FIVE minutes, doing chest compressions and administering wake-up shots.

FINALLY, she started breathing on her own. The three of us visibly let out a breath of relief.

As you can imagine, I felt as if I'd run a hundred mile race and it was still mid-morning.

We left the vet's office and started to go to get the children. As we approached a green light. Movement to my right caught my eye and I shouted, "STOP!"

Fortunately my husband didn't hesitate. A white van sped through the red light and we would have been in a major accident. But we were safe.

Several feet on the other side of the intersection, the van driver realized what he had done and stopped. We drove home without stopping.

What a day for a birthday. I was drained.

The afternoon went quietly with homemade cards from my children and a gift from my husband.

After supper and clean-up, I told my husband that I was going to get into my long flannel winter nightie and when the kids went to bed, I was too.

He gave me a funny look.

About fifteen minutes after I'd sat down in the living room in my nightie, the doorbell rang. I thought, who is at the door after dark on a winter night?

A family in the neighborhood walked in and asked, "Are we the first?" At my husband's nod, they shouted, "SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

TOTAL SHOCK describes my reaction. Before I could get up and run to change. More people crowded in.  "SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

I gave up. My husband said, "You can see I really surprised her."

Everyone laughed including me. After all, I would have been more exposed in my bathing suit than my neck to toe, grannie nightie.

So that was my most memorable birthday! So can you top that? (I sincerely hope not.:-)

IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T DOWNLOADED IT YET, MY BOOK WINTER'S SECRET IS PERMAFREE. TELL A FRIEND!--LYN

PS: The cat above is our present cat. I don't have any digital photos of Shadow. But she was a beautiful seal point Siamese mix. And much beloved.

What is your favorite genre? by Laura Scott

Hello everyone! Apologies for posting late, my son has Covid and I have been a bit distracted. My blog topic for today is  favorite genres.

I personally have long been a romantic suspense fan. I've certainly read other genres, but I always tend to come back to suspense. I have loved being a nurse, but I think there's a small part of me that wishes I had become a cop, I love trying to figure out who the bad guy is.

I've written mostly Christian Romantic Suspense, too. I've written plenty of straight romance stories, but tend to add a bit of a mystery.

I like historical romance stories, too, but  when I discovered historical suspense I was hooked. Now I'll only read historical romantic suspense, Deanna Raybourn and her Lady Julia Grey mysteries are a personal favorite.

What are your favorite genres? Do you read a variety or tend to stick with one? Inquiring minds want to know!

Two days left to get Target for Terror free. If you enjoy fast paced romantic suspense stories, you may want to give this a try. The price goes back to $4.99 on Monday.

My Best Book Covers Ever! by Pat Simmons

As an author, it's heartwarming when readers compliment our covers. I've had some great and gorgeous covers---indie and traditional--over the yers, but there are two that stand out. DRIVEN TO BE LOVED, featuring my daughter Simi Simmons and my most recent Christmas story, WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS. I mean what's the point of being an author mom and not have your son and daughter grace the covers? :) As any child, or adults in this case, they had a preference on what kind of story they would represent. I had to remind them, the stories aren't about them.

It was funny for friends and relatives to see the newest cover and say, "That looks like my nephew."

My response, "It is."

Simi is on an updated cover of a traditionally published story. The book cover I imagined for Jay didn't work for him because he didn't like the hero in the story. Really? I had to create WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS from scratch and it pressure. I've written about 40 books and novellas, and the pressure was intense. I had to make my son be a good guy in case some of his coworkers thought the story was really about him, and I felt my writing had to be better than best in case people hadn't read me.
Yeah, it was pressure. Well, my mission has been accomplished and I'm glad it's over. Whew. Now, on to my next project.

I hope you will check these stories out. They're good. Take it from the Mom. LOL
About WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS:
A chance meeting.
An undeniable attraction.
And a first date that starts with a stakeout that leads to a winner takes all shopping spree. It’s the making of a holiday romance.
While philanthropist Sterling Price believes in charitable causes, he and licensed social worker Ciara Summers have a difference of opinion on how to bless others.
Ciara is a rebel with a cause and a hundred reasons why helping those less fortunate is important.
Sterling is a man of means who believes there is a financial responsibility that comes with giving.
The Lord will make sure everyone’s needs are met, and He has something extra for Sterling and Ciara that  can’t wait until Christmas.

About DRIVEN TO BE LOVED:
It doesn’t matter how many years go by, love will always find a way….On the surface, Brecee Carmen has nothing in common with Adrian Cole. She is a pediatrician certified in trauma care; he is a transportation problem-solver for a luxury car dealership (a.k.a., a car salesman). Despite their slow but steady attraction to each other, neither one of them is sure that they're compatible. To complicate matters, Brecee is the sole unattached Carmen daughter when it seems as though everyone else around her—family and friends—is finding love.Through a series of discoveries, Adrian and Brecee learn that things don't always happen by coincidence. Generational forces are at work, keeping promises, protecting family members, and perhaps even drawing Adrian back to the church he had strayed from. Is it possible that God has been playing matchmaker all along?
