Writing Resolutions for 2021...by Kristin Wallace

While most people make New Year’s Resolutions, authors tend to make Writer’s Resolutions. At least I do. Every year I have grand plans to write X number of books. Unfortunately, I made very little progress is my writer goals due to continuing health issues that mess with my ability to focus, which makes creative writing extremely difficult.

Plus, the craziness of 2020 made it hard to even think about writing. But once again, I'm hoping to get back on track for 2021. I do have plans and plenty of ongoing projects to keep me busy.

I still want to reissue my inspirational series, COVINGTON FALLS CHRONICLE. I also hope to continue with that series. There are so many characters begging for stories in my quirky Southern town. I also want to get back to working on a new series called THE LOST ROYALS about separated siblings who find out they are royalty.

Finally, there is a joint project/series that I want to publish with one of my author friends. It’s a modern-day take on Cinderella featuring a pair of magic shoes and a cursed Stepmother who might not be as bad as everyone thought.

So those are my plans…now to get writing!

Writing Resolutions in 2020...by Kristin Wallace

While most people make New Year’s Resolutions, authors tend to make Writer’s Resolutions. At least I do. Every year I have grand plans to write X number of books. Unfortunately, I have to confess that 2019 was not a good year for me as an author. I had plans, but most of them didn’t happen. A lot was due to having to meet deadlines for my “day job” freelance writing gig, often working 7 days a week to get things turned in on time.

The other reason had to do with some weird health issues that messed with my ability to focus, which as you can imagine, makes creative writing extremely difficult. In many ways, the voices that I've always had in my head basically went “silent”. In the end, I only managed to publish one book, SECOND CHANCE HERO, which is part of the Palm Cove Tales series.

BUT…I am truly hoping to get back on track for 2020. I do have plans and plenty of ongoing projects to keep me busy.

One is the reissue my inspirational series, COVINGTON FALLS CHRONICLE. I got the right back from the original publisher some time ago and created new covers. I’m just doing light editing. I also hope to continue with that series. There are so many characters begging for stories in my quirky Southern town.

I am also working on a fun new series called THE LOST ROYALS about separated siblings who find out they are royalty.

Finally, there is a joint project/series that I plan to publish with one of my author friends. It’s a modern-day take on Cinderella featuring a pair of magic shoes and a cursed Stepmother who might not be as bad as everyone thought.

So those are my plans…now to get writing!

I did put together a Christmas box set with three of my Shellwater Key holiday tales (Finding You At Christmas, Falling For You At Christmas, and Loving You At Christmas). Christmas in Shellwater Key is available on Kindle Unlimited so even though it's January, go ahead and scoop it up now.

15 Feel Good New Year's Resolutions by Donna Fasano

Many people make promises to themselves to ring in the New Year, but we seldom keep them for very long. Reevaluating your life is hard stuff! Here’s a list of resolutions that will make you feel better, physically and mentally. These suggestions aren’t that difficult and are sure to make you a happier person.

1.     Practice anonymous random acts of kindness.
2.     Make at least one person smile each day.
3.     Read at least one book each month. (Don’t forget to review it. The author will SMILE! See resolution #2.)
4.     Go someplace you’ve never been.
5.     Be kinder to yourself.
6.     Be kinder to others.
7.     Be quick to listen, slow to speak.
8.     Take the stairs. It’s good for you.
9.     Let go of old hurts and grudges.
10.  Forgive.
11.  Try a new hobby.
12.   Donate all clothing you haven’t worn in a year.
13.   Start and end each day consciously feeling happy and grateful.
14.   Buy less plastic. It’s bad for our planet.
15.   Stay in touch with the people who matter.

What resolution would you add to the list?

I have 2 sweet romances that sell for 99¢. I hope you’ll try them.

New Year…New Projects by Kristin Wallace

Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with family & friends. The start of a new year is when we all make resolutions and plans, including writers. I wanted to let you in on some projects that I plan for this year.

Project #1: Palm Cove Tales

First up in March, the (very delayed) release of SECOND CHANCE HERO, featuring Serena Douglas, who was a major player in The Heiress Games series. Serena is Abby’s “slightly” difficult sister from Not Quite An Heiress. She’s paired with security expert, Damon Grant, who also made an appearance in the books. This book was supposed to come out in the fall, but I fell way behind as Serena and Damon took their sweet time telling me their story. This story involves saving a hairless Sphynx cat named King Tut. Lots of fun!

Project #2: Return to Covington Falls Chronicles

At the end of last year, I got the rights back to my inspirational romance series, Covington Falls Chronicles. I plan to re-release the original 4 books this year and THEN there will be all NEW books. I’m so excited to be able to return to my quirky little Southern town and these characters I love. I’m curious as to what has happened to them J

Project #3: The Lost Royals

This is an entirely new series based on 6 royal siblings. The catch is…they don’t know they are royalty. After their mother and father (the King and Queen) die, the young children are spirited away and hidden to save them from their evil uncle. Years later it is finally safe to bring the children back. Only they are no longer children, of course, and they have no idea how to be royals. They must be “taught” how to be a royal.

So there are my plans. Now just to find a way to make it all happen…I foresee a lot of early morning writing sessions.

Setting Goals for 2015 by Kristin Wallace

So it’s 2015 and time for a fresh start. It’s a time two make new goals. For me it's writing goals. Whether I success in those goals...well that's another matter. Last year, I had the grand idea that I would write FOUR books in 2014.

Confession…I did not come close.

I finished one book BY CHRISTMAS, which I ended up self-publishing as part of the Sweet Christmas Kisses box set. Then I put it out as a single book. It was my first foray into the world of indie publishing so there was a big learning curve, meaning everything took longer to accomplish. I did have the benefit of working with 13 other fantastic authors from this group on the box set and learned SO MUCH.

So what about those other three books I was supposed to complete? Book two was supposed to be the fifth installment in my Covington Falls Chronicles series. However, somewhere along the line it became not Book 5 in that series, but Book 1 in a WHOLE NEW SERIES. It’s set in another fictional town, only this one is in Florida (where I happen to live). It centers on a prized pig named Matilda who inherits a fortune from her eccentric owner. Oh yes, there are also three women competing for custody of the pig (and control of the money, of course). As well as a trio of sexy men who might win their hearts.

The other two books are part of another series. This one is a contemporary romance/women’s fiction. It’s also set in Florida (different town) and it follows three former childhood friends who return to their hometown and become involved in rehabilitating an old dinner theatre called The Paradise. I finished the first book a couple years ago, but book 2 and 3 still need to be put down on paper.

The third idea is another series that is perhaps the craziest concept I’ve ever come up with. My heroine is a spoiled heiress who dies and then gets recruited as a celestial matchmaker, helping soul mates find their One True Love before it's too late. It’s crazy and weird and hilariously funny…It is also so far away from anything else I’ve ever written. A little scary.

So…yeah…that’s a lot of books. And I have a demanding full time job. I don’t know how I will possibly do them. I need a plan. I need help. I need to find that impossibly rich tycoon so I can quit the day job and write full time.

Hmmm…okay...writing all those books might happen first.

Finding Balance by Melinda Curtis

My New Year’s resolution actually started last September. As an empty-nester, I’d gotten into the habit of working long days. I’d get to my computer by 7:30 am (after the Today Show’s first half hour), and turn off my laptop at 9 pm (when my 3 pm caffeine hit faded). In September, I realized I’d written five books in 2013. When I told Mr. Curtis, he gave me the look that said, “Uh, yeah. I knew that.”

Reality check. I needed life balance. I wanted to find balance, it was just…work always beckoned. My writing muse wanted to Riverdance some more. But even I had to admit, I was tired, maybe even burnt out.

And so it was in September that I made an effort to disconnect. I took Saturdays off to go to run errands and go to the movies with my husband (even the bad movies). I made friends at the gym. Those friends convinced me to run some fun 5k races (running doesn’t begin to describe my pace). I made time to visit my mom. But I was still tired and maybe – as my daughter pointed out – I was missing my kids more than I wanted to let on and replacing them with work.

One day, I saw someone on Facebook post a picture of a puppy in need of a home. A small puppy, a happy puppy, a puppy that needed love and attention and training. A puppy who seemed to need me when no one else did anymore. Tally slowed down my production schedule. She slowed down my life. But she was so much work! And then a funny thing happened – I found balance! Tally gave me a reason to stop and have lunch away from my desk, to take walks when the sun came out, to play ball in the backyard. She also created reasons for Mr. Curtis and I to spend time together beyond bad movies and stale popcorn.
Yes, we take Tally on 5K Runs in a stroller!
At this time of year, when we’re recovering from the rush of the holidays and thinking ever-so-briefly about the year ahead and the changes we’d like to make, I’m not recommending bringing home a puppy. Instead, I’ll say you have permission to seek out more balance or health or love or whatever would make you happier in whatever avenue best suits you. But first, you have to get up out of your chair to do it!

Here’s to a new year filled with opportunities to disconnect, to redirect, and to reconnect to what’s important in life. What are you missing when you sit too long at the keyboard or spend too much time away from your family?

Melinda Curtis writes the Harmony Valley series of sweet romances for the Harlequin Heartwarming line. Brenda Novak says: “Season of Change has found a place on my keeper shelf”. Melinda also writes independently published, hotter romances as Mel Curtis. Jayne Ann Krentz says of Blue Rules: “Sharp, sassy, modern version of a screwball comedy from Hollywood's Golden Age except a lot hotter.” Melinda is married to her college sweetheart, and has three kids in college. She follows the NFL because one young quarterback is from her hometown, and follows Duke basketball because Mr. Curtis has a man crush on Coach K. Happy New Year!

Here are the 2014 goals/resolutions from some of the Sweet Romance Reads authors!

In 2014 I'm going to organize my social media and promotion activities to best utilize my time so I can write more. I'm also going to read more for pleasure.

My New Year's Resolution is to enjoy life's little moments and try not to worry so much.

My main resolution for 2014 is to promote, advertise, chat, blog, and be visible, communicate with my fans through Twitter, Facebook, newsletters, events and direct mails.

Mona Risk
Author of Christmas Here and Now

In 2014, I will get back into running and swimming because when I'm feeling good and healthy the writing goes much better!

Melissa McClone
Author of Home For Christmas

My New Year's resolution for 2014 is to develop a much more disciplined schedule, where I unplug the Internet and turn off the phone for three hours each morning and do nothing but write.

Ginny Baird
Author of Baby, Be Mine (Holiday Brides Book 5)

In 2014 I will finish the half-written manuscripts sitting on my computer, and I will stop eating soooo many cookies while I do my writing and editing work.

In the new year, I'd like to find more balance. I tend to push too hard toward goals and responsibilities.  I need to remember this life only comes around once.

Melinda Curtis
Author of Dandelion Wishes

During 2014, I'm determined to find calm and balance--calm and balance in my professional life, calm and balance in my personal life.

Author of Reclaim My Heart

Publish one cozy mystery and one fun, sweet romance in 2014!

My resolution: This year I'm going to be neat, tidy and the most organised person in the world. I really am.

I resolve to begin and end each day with gratitude, and in between, to do the best I can with what I have.

To love better, eat better and work smarter.

I'm focusing on health in 2014, both so I can be around to watch my granddaughter grow up and because I know my productivity will improve.
