Grandmas are on my mind a lot recently as mine hasn't been feeling so well since October. Grandma recently went onto Hospice and I struggle to imagine life without her. She is the matriarch of my dad's family and I do worry that once she passes that his family will drift apart, but hopefully not. My grandmother had 7 children. Unfortunately, my uncle passed in a car accident a few years ago, so she has six living children. There are so many of us grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren that I've lost count. Truly, there's a lot of us.
With my grandma playing such a crucial role in my own life, it's no wonder that I have strong, fun older women in my Wrapped Up in Christmas books. I call them the Butterflies (Bodie Lewis calls them bees, wasps, hornets, and any other insect he can think of. LOL). They're a group of friends who love each other dearly, but are not above poking at each other. As I've written this series, they're definitely my favorite secondary characters.
In Wrapped Up in Christmas Hope, the heroine, Morgan, moves back to Pine Hill, Kentucky to make a fresh start after her husband died in an accident. Morgan is Butterfly Claudia's granddaughter and welcomes her with open arms to help Morgan get back on her feet. I enjoyed writing their relationship with each other and how Morgan valued her Grammy Claudia's advice and life perspective. Probably, I enjoyed this so much because I love my grandma's advice and life perspective. She's always such a kind, positive person and I strive to be more like her.
What about you? Did you have a special grandparent or older person who influenced/influences you? Or are you that special grandparent passing on your love and knowledge to future generations?
