Goodbye, beautiful summer! by Susan Aylworth

 As August draws to a close, we say goodbye to Summer with all her joys and hazards. Where I now live, in Utah at the base of the Rocky Mountains, summer is one of the loveliest times of the year. The growth of scrub oak and evergreens is at its fullest, coating the Rockies in a drape of velvety green. The sky is a crystalline blue, and the lakes all sparkle in the bright sunlight.

I was privileged to spend a part of this summer at a writer's retreat near Park City. Though this area is best known for its world-class ski runs, the summer is better suited to water skiing. From the deck at the lovely home where our group stayed, I watched people enjoy a cooling splash in the nearby reservoir. Utah is careful with its water but treasures the recreation it provides.

 

As planned, the retreat also allowed for some uninterrupted writing time--time I felt ready to appreciate. I'm releasing several new editions of my Rainbow Rock Romances this summer and, with the help of this week in the mountains, I'll have more new work coming before the year is out. I'm enjoying being able to create again.

Now our little ones--and some of our bigger ones--are all going back to school. The roads clog at predictable times, and the weather is beginning to cool. It won't be long before the velvety green on the mountains morphs into shades of yellow, orange, red, and gold. Not long after that, we'll see the first dustings of snow. For now, I'll enjoy this beautiful, beautiful summer while it lasts. May you also enjoy.
