A Favorite Toy By Margaret Daley

A Favorite Toy by Margaret Daley

One of my favorite toys I ever got when I was a little girl was the first Barbie doll (1959) and later the Ken doll in 1961. I used to make up stories using my dolls as the characters in them. Barbie and Ken were perfect for a budding romance writer. I spent hours coming up with different scenarios, using the dolls’ wardrobes as though I was shooting a Doris Day movie where she changed clothes all the time. I used to save my money to buy different outfits. Back then I never dreamed I would end up writing romances, but it did spark my love for making up stories.

I guess you can never tell what the toys you play with will lead to. Of course, I wish I’d known the kind of money the original doll is worth today. We are talking thousands of dollars. At least that is what I saw online. I had the blonde Barbie, which isn’t worth as much as the brunette Barbie. Oh, well, I had too much fun with my Barbie to worry about what it could be worth in the future.

What kind of toy did you have that you remember playing with as a child?

  1. My Little Red Spinning Wheel. As an aside, my mom made a ton of outfits for my Barbie.

    1. It was fun to come up with "stories" for my Barbie doll. I think that was the beginning of me becoming a writer.

  3. I had the precursor of the Barbie doll, the Jill doll. She was a little bigger, and my grandmother made so many outfits for that doll out of scraps of material she had left from other projects. I played Barbies with my daughters and especially my granddaughters. My older granddaughter gave me my "lines" when we played.

  4. I loved playing with Barbie, Ken, Skipper, and the gang! I had a few versions of Barbie, including the blonde with ponytail from early 1960s. I also had a Julia doll, based on the character Diahann Carroll played in the late '60s and early '70s. She was beautiful! Most of the dolls lived in shoe boxes, but they had lovely clothes because my mom was a fabulous seamstress. :)

    1. I got one of the original Barbie dolls and if I hadn't played with it and kept it in its original package, I would have made a lot of money on that doll. But what girl 9 years old would be thinking about that!

  5. Oh boy, not sure what this says about me (grin) but for me, it was a Raggedy Ann doll. One outfit. I talked to her. She was a great listener, I think!

  6. In my preteens, it was Barbies. When I was younger, I loved playing with those bags of wild animals. I'd spend hours making a world for them in the dirt and grass. Then I'd get tired of it and start fresh the next day. Maybe it was the budding writing in me. lol.
