Old People.... by Christine Bush

I am getting up there in years.  I don’t give a lot of thought to this fact, except then my “old bones” act up and remind me.  Or my granddaughter does.

We often take grandkids with us to church dinners when we are minding them, and they enjoy going through the simple buffet line and picking out their favorite things to eat.  Our friends are also “people of a certain age”, and we tend to share a table with several different couples.  Lots of conversations.

The grandkids are polite, and often enthusiastic, especially when there are brownies involved. But at first, I was worried that these energetic youngsters would be bored with our “aged” conversation. But my granddaughter set me straight a few weeks back.

“Are we coming to dinner tonight with you old people?” She asked.

OLD PEOPLE? I almost swallowed my teeth.

“Well, yes,” I said.  “If it’s ok. I guess we are a bit old.”

She looked puzzled.  “I didn’t say that because it’s a bad thing,” she said with seven year old clarity. “Because it’s a good thing. It’s fun.”

“It’s fun? So you’re not bored?”

The look again.

“No, it’s not boring. They are very smart. Everybody has such great stories.  Like the guy who talked about driving a truck all the way across the country one day.  Do you know how big this country is? Wow!"

"And the lady who said she sews those giant quilty- blanket things out of little pieces of cloth. That was cool. I wish I could do that some day."
"And the lady and man who used to live in Africa and teach people about church. That was really brave."
"Everybody has a story to tell.  About life before they were old.  Before they had white hair. Or got bald.  Old people are really cool.”
So there you have it.  We oldsters are cool, and we have stories that still need telling.

Are there old people in your life?  If we take the time to ask them about their stories, we just might uncover an abundance of fascinating experience and wisdom about life.  And see how cool they really are! I’d love to hear what you discover!

In our new anthology of sweet Christmas novellas, my story, “Christmas with the Carmichaels” features a hero and heroine who are senior citizens!  Love can strike at any time!  I hope you enjoy it, and find them to be “cool” too!
