A Day in the Life of an Author at a Writers Conference by Melinda Curtis

I'm late posting my blog today. Why? Because I'm still "hungover" from the Romance Writers of America conference in Orlando (which basically means I'm still catching up on life and my to-do list).

What does an author do at RWA? That depends on where they are in their career. There are plenty of workshops every day for every aspect of writing - craft, career management, the writing life (these are basically about finding balance). Since I've been around awhile, my days are usually filled with meetings more than workshops.

I attend book signings.

I meet with other authors I cross-promote with. Look how dignified we all look (from left: Cari Lynn Webb, me, Amy Vastine, Carol Ross).

I meet with my agent and my editor. And if, for example, my editor wants to eat and she guides me to a character breakfast at Disney, I won't complain about the hardship.

I attend hosted sessions by my publisher - meet and greets (that's me with editors Claire Caldwell & Kathryn Lye), the Harlequin party, question & answer sessions with the management team. Click the link to see video of the Harlequin party.

It's a big grind and no fun at all!

So, if you want to write romance and attend RWA, take your vitamins and rest up, because it's a lot of work!

Melinda Curtis is an award-winning USA Today bestseller who writes sweet romance for Harlequin, sweet romantic comedy novellas and sexy traditional contemporary romances. Follow her on social media or by signing up for Sweet Romance Reads newsletter on this page.
