Sitting Fit by Alicia Street

Whether we’re reading or writing or working in an office, most of us spend way too much time sitting. And the latest research on what that does to our health is downright scary—from back pain to obesity and even the increased risk of life threatening illnesses.

The good news is that making ourselves get up and move can change the picture.

Having spent my early adult life as a professional dancer, I already have trouble sitting for too long. But being a writer and editor and loving to read for pleasure in my spare time, that’s what I do for most of my days.

Here are some tips for staying fit and counteracting the negative effects of prolonged sitting that have helped me.

Set a timer. I try to get up every fifteen minutes.

Move your arms and legs when you get up. Maybe play one of your favorite tunes and dance, or if you’re at work, go to the ladies’ room and march in place for a full minute. So what if a co-worker comes in and thinks you’re a bit odd.

Sitting for so long often means our butt muscles lose tone. A good exercise for that is to get down on hands and knees and lift your leg behind you. I recommend at least two sets of ten on each leg. And if you want to get your stomach muscles involved, reach out the opposite arm as you lift the leg.

So if you’re going to sit— you have to stay fit. J

On the Road Again

The past few years have been whirlwind of travel for me and my husband. A year ago we were in Spain. Here is one of my favorite photos from that trip. It was taken near Granada, Spain. I love the snow in the mountains.
Last year we also traveled to Australia and New Zealand. It's hard to pick just one photo from that trip, but here's one. I took this photo while we were walking along the rugged coastline on the northern island of New Zealand.
I have to do one from Australia, too. I took the photo below as we traveled the Ocean Road on the southern coast of Australia.
This year has been no different. In February, we left the warmth of southern Arizona to travel to New Jersey. This is what we experienced while we were there.

Recently we took a trip to Utah with friends. During the trip we visited six national parks. The Grand Canyon, The Petrified Forest, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef. My favorite is Bryce Canyon. The hoodoos there are amazing. Here are a couple of photos from Bryce Canyon.

I'm still trying to figure out how I can put my characters into one of these trips. I love to see new and interesting sights. What is your favorite part of traveling?

5 Tips to Make Mornings the Best Part of Your Day by Josie Riviera

Hi, everyone!
Even if you’re a night owl, (like me!), here’s five morning tips that will help you to feel refreshed and begin a productive day.

First: Head to bed earlier!
No need to check your phone one more time, or watch another episode of a TV show. All that social media can wait until the morning.

Second: Pair your morning coffee with a glass of water, which will keep you hydrated!
I aim for 8 glasses of water a day, and add fresh lemon to mine.

Third: Stretch, stretch, stretch!
Try yoga or work out to an exercise video on YouTube.
Don’t have time? Stretch your muscles by touching your toes and then reach for the ceiling. Remember to breathe slowly and gently.

Fourth: Get moving and burn calories!
Go for a walk, do some housework, or simply climb up and down a flight of stairs.

Fifth: Eat!
Make breakfast a nutritious beginning of your day. Try yogurt, or my morning favorite … oatmeal and fresh fruit.

How do you plan for a productive morning? Please share your comments below:

If you love house flipping and home decorating, my newest sweet romance, 1-800-CUPID, is for you! Reserve your copy today!

A house flipper looking for quick profit. A survivor with a dream. Can two broken hearts find a place to call home?

When a Miami investor calls in search of prime property flip prospects, North Carolina real estate broker Candee Contando expects to meet a balding, steely-eyed land shark. Turns out the first customer she’s had in months is a hot prospect in more ways than one.

Except his gaze has fallen on her dream house, a dilapidated Victorian she just bid her last penny on in hopes of creating a safe place for disadvantaged children—like the girl she used to be.

Teddy Winchester is adept at negotiating life’s curves, but Candee’s curves stop him in his tracks. She’s a warm spark in the emptiness he’s felt since his brother died, leaving him with a beloved nephew to raise.

Attraction glows in Candee’s eyes as well, but there’s also wistfulness as she points out all the reasons an old, tumbledown Victorian doesn’t fit into his tried-and-true house-flipping plan. Yet the more he looks at the house—and at her—he begins to think some things are worth the risk.

Now if only he can convince her that building a new life often starts with tearing down some walls…

When the heart flips, there’s no telling where the walls will fall.

What's Your Love Style? by Christine Bush

What’s YOUR Love Style?

In most languages, there are many different words that are used to make it easier to describe “Love”.  However, in our world, we use the same word in many different scenarios.  I LOVE my husband. I LOVE the Phillies. I LOVE my mother. I LOVE my dog.  I LOVE pizza.  For the most part (hopefully), we don’t mean the same thing.

Even in the specific case of “love”, regarding a “mate or a date”, people mean different things when they say “I love you”.

In 1973, Dr. John Lee first proposed his list definitions of love styles, and to this day, they are great  topic of thought and discussion. How do you define love? Most people are a combination of several of the styles.

EROS LOVE.  This is the kind of exciting, romantic love. Think love at first sight. Think pounding hearts and sexual tension.  People with this style are the romantics, the people who work hard to keep that “special zing” in their relationships. I think a lot of romance writers and readers can identify with this.

LUDUS LOVE. This is the kind of light, flirty love that wants no commitments.  My college students call it “being a player”.  Quantity and not necessarily quality. Sometimes this is a stage in life (and not a bad one) where young people are exploring and learning about what they want in life.  “Not ready” for making a commitment is totally normal, though some keep this stage going all their lives. It can bring some heartbreak.

STORGE LOVE. I call this “best friend love”. Some folks clearly know that they want to “marry their best friend”. Some have a best friend for a long time. Then one day, they look at each other and all of a sudden, kaboom, they are “in love” and everything changes.  In this style, people often have very like interests, complementary careers, and parallel dreams.  Marriage, children, and building a life all happen very naturally, and fidelity is common.  Each partner “likes and respects” each other, and would never cheat on their “best friend”.

PRAGMA LOVE.  This is “practical love”. Pragma lovers sometimes have a “list” of characteristics necessary for their love commitment.  It might be economic, like a level of employment or education or financial status. It might be physical (ie tall dark and handsome). It might be interest driven (ie must love dogs, love children, love travelling). These lovers often have a life plan together (ie, finish school, buy the house, travel the world, then have kids, save for college).  Fidelity is present, but sometimes for a different reason (ie, if I cheated on her, she’d divorce me and take all my money). A little pragma is really practical, and good for most people, though some take it to extremes. Think of the wealthy 85 year old man on oxygen, with a 25 year old blond (wearing lots of diamonds and gold).

AGAPE LOVE.  This is caring love.  Altruistic love. Sometimes sacrificial love.  This is the love that cares for others, wanting the best for the person they love, even when it’s hard. Sometimes this is called “motherly” love.  This is the love that makes us flexible and forgiving, and supportive of the other.  Most good relationships that last have a good dose of this. However, if one person is strongly Agape, and the other has narcississtic tendencies, the Agape lover can become very drained. Best of BOTH have some of this.

MANIA LOVE. This is explosive, dramatic love. Manic lovers thrive on conflict and drama. Often there’s a lot of yelling and screaming and crying going on. Some in this category have damaged self esteem, and a breakup brings lots of hysteria. (Ie, “I can’t live without you” or “I will die if he leaves me.” In these emotional relationships, the stress seems to keep things intense. Often, there is an element of jealousy and suspicion.

The rich characters in our stories often fit one or more of these styles. And how about you?  What’s your love style(e)?
