What's your fondest memory of a Fourth of July? Win a free book! Roxanne Rustand

Happy Fourth of July!  The firecrackers have been booming in our rural area for several nights, so our fifteen-month-old golden retriever has been cowering once dusk falls.

I love the festivities of this holiday and the chance to be with family and friends, but for Doogan's sake, I'll be relieved when he can finally relax and not be so scared about going outside to potty.

Family and friends...such a joy!  Have you been able to get together with someone this weekend?

Some of the birthdays in our family have managed to coordinate with one holiday or another, which makes those holidays even more special---and convenient.  😄

My husband and I both have birthdays within a few days of the Fourth of July, so we can usually be with at least some of our kids and grands.  And all three of our kids plus the two newest grandbabies have birthdays close to Christmas.

Our son Brian's is actually on Christmas Eve, which he loves because then he'll always be with family on his birthday.  And, one daughter-in-law was born on Halloween.

So beyond the usual celebration of various holidays---and of course the true meaning of Christmas--we have lots of good memories of being with family at those times.

One special memory of the Fourth of July was when our older son and his family lived on a vast reservoir north of Dallas. We spent the evening until midnight out on his boat, watching endless fireworks sparkling in the sky in every direction. So beautiful!

Do you have a fond memory of a holiday that you'd like to share?

Leave a comment and you'll be in a drawing for a free e-copy of any book in my Montana Secrets inspirational romance mystery novels!  To see the whole series, CLICK HERE.

Wishing you all a happy Fourth of July!

#Expectancy - by Magdalena Scott

Hi! I'm baaaaack.

What? You didn't notice I was gone? Yep - I was on hiatus for a few months while dealing with some personal issues.

I struggled in 2019. And - oh yeah, there was also that rough patch I sometimes refer to as 2018.

But hey, we all have troubles, don't we?

I'm really hopeful for 2020. Because of the topic of a devotion I read several weeks ago, I've chosen expectancy as my word for this year.

Gratitude Helps
I try to always be grateful, reminding myself throughout each day of the many blessings I enjoy. I aim for contentment with what I have. My minimalist lifestyle makes it a bit easier to find that kind of peace. Spending as little time as possible on social media, or any other type of media, and more time in person with folks in my small hometown, also benefits my mental and emotional health.

Imagine a Rosy Future
I need to be present, healthy, and able to function as a helper and encourager to those who depend on me. But I've learned that facing hardships with stubborn gratitude works even better alongside occasional contemplation of happier times.

So while doing the best I can in the here and now, I'm also looking ahead. I've made plans for work (new books!) and play (making music, spending time with loved ones, traveling!) I'm feeling more hopeful and upbeat, which is a better place from which to write sweet romance.

I look forward to sharing more about all those positive outcomes as they unfold this year.
#Expectancy2020Maybe I should put it on a t-shirt. Perhaps printed backward, so I can read it in a mirror?

What are you looking forward to this year?

Cover Reveal by Merrillee Whren

Last month I talked about the hero and heroine, Jeremy and Whitney, of my current work in progress, A PLACE TO FIND LOVE. This is the final book in my Front Porch Promises series. Here are the other books in the series.
I now have the cover for A PLACE TO FIND LOVE. I think it captures the front porch theme of the others books. What do you think?

Whitney Hamilton wants to put her past behind her and make the best of her current circumstances, a high demand job and caring for her mother, who has dementia. But Whitney’s newest coworker, Jeremy Cunningham, is a constant reminder of her foolish past.

Jeremy wants to show the world he is his own man, but that may prove difficult as he steps into his brother's old job. The biggest obstacle to his success is Whitney, his brother’s former girlfriend, a source of discord for his family.

When Whitney and Jeremy find themselves attracted to each other, there are so many reasons, old and new, to keep them from revealing their feelings for each other. Will a long-kept secret finally bring them together?

Do you think office romances have a build-in conflict?

More than an Ornament by Melanie D. Snitker

If someone were to walk into our living room today and take a look at our Christmas tree, they might think it's an unorganized mess. There is no obvious theme with ornaments of every color, shape, and type along with candy canes, and multi-colored lights. Not only that, but some of the ornaments are clumped, with more hanging on the middle and lower part of the tree (because that's where the kids can reach).

I have to admit I love it like this because when I look at our tree, I see memories. Each of those ornaments are more than just an ornament, they are like a photograph that reminds me of a moment in time.

Growing up, my parents let me and my brothers pick out one ornament a year. My mom meticulously wrote down when we got the ornament and how old we were. I remember the anticipation of getting them out each year to hang them up, and how I would play with them on the tree as a kid. With the exception of a couple that have broken (namely due to a cat who once knocked our Christmas tree down), I still have all of those ornaments from my childhood: The pretty frosted Christmas tree from my first Christmas, the pretty little cardinal, and even Miss Bianca that we got from McDonalds the year the "Rescuers Down Under" came out in theaters.

My husband and I continue to collect an ornament a year as well. Hallmark began releasing the Snowball and Tuxedo ornaments that second Christmas after we were married, and we haven't missed one of them yet. Our first Christmas together as a married couple, my sweet husband gave me an ornament. It was Droopy the dog with mistletoe hanging off his hat and a sign that said, "Pucker Up Baby." I remember laughing and blushing profusely. It's still one of my favorites!

Now we carry on that tradition with our kids and allow them to pick one favorite ornament to add to the tree each year. Between that and the precious handmade ornaments we make ever season, the tree is an absolutely beautiful conglomeration of memories.

If you decorate for Christmas, what kind of ornaments do you use on your tree? Is your Christmas tree themed? Do you have a favorite ornament? I'd love to hear from you!

Meet My Pet Family by Karen Rock

I'm a proud pet mom! Having grown up with pets, I've never considered a family complete without them. Each animal that's come into my life has taught me so much about unconditional love, about giving, about loss. The good times with a pet are some of the best moments of my life and the bad times have been some of the worst. Still, I would never want a day to pass when it's not filled with wagging tails, sloppy kisses and a furry snuggle.

Here's a peek at the wonderful pets that complete my family!

Angel is my fifteen-year-old Birman cat, called the Sacred Cat of Burma, who, legend has it, acquired its striking appearance through the intervention of a blue-eyed goddess, who rewarded a temple cat’s love for and devotion to his priest by turning his white coat golden and changing his yellow eyes to blue. Angel is quite the character. He hides when strangers come over, but when it's just family, he runs the household and is the alpha pet despite only weighing about nine pounds! He loves Christmas because he can lay under the tree like a lion in the Savannah and pounce on my poor, unsuspected dogs!

He's addicted to whatever chemical is on photographs and will lick anything glossy. He also loves to pull off present bows, wrestling with my puppy, laying on his back by the fire, and pressing every bit of his body against yours while flicking his plume of a tail in your face. He's quite the character and we adore him.

Lizzie is my fourteen-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel. She's always had health issues and we nearly lost her in her early puppy days because of low blood sugar. When she was ten, she was diagnosed with diabetes. Despite being a little fussy about things, Lizzie shocked me by never complaining or giving me a hard time with her twice a day insulin shots. I was actually more squeamish that her and her stoicism helped me! Lizzie loves to bark at her toys like they are real threats. It's sometimes so convincing that I'll race to her "rescue" only to find her distress is over a small, purple dinosaur... haha.

She hates going outside in the rain, though she loves a warm bath. She lives for car rides, walks and anything peanut butter flavored. In the past few years, Lizzie lost our other dog, Little Bit, lost her hearing and, most recently, her sight. Despite all of this, she follows my lead when I take her on walks, going on trust and love alone. She still goes outside a lot, navigates the house and will bark like mad at a toy she can only smell. I know my time with her is coming to a close, but I can't imagine my life without my little fighter who loves us too much to leave us yet.

Zoey is the latest addition to our family. A year ago we drove to an Amish farm in PA to buy a breed of puppy we'd never heard of: Cava-poo. She's half Cavalier King Charles spaniel and half mini poodle. Since we'd lost our dog, Little Bit, the previous summer, I wasn't in the mood for a new dog. However, my husband surprised me with her because he saw how much I still grieved and was also down about Lizzie losing her sight and hearing. The farmers had named her Courtney, but her picture was so zany and I knew instantly she needed a quirkier name; eventually, we landed on Zoey. It fits her perfectly. She's a very upbeat outgoing dog who loves people, kids, and other dogs--even really big ones.

When she met a huge German Shepherd recently, she was wiggling all over in delight and the Shepherd put a massive paw on her shoulder as if to say "Stop moving!" and she froze, lifted her chin, and sat there like a statue until he'd sniffed all around her. We all agree that her coat is softer than fleece and her dark eyes in her blonde face is so cute. She loves to walk, run errands with us, and is addicted to Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers which has made her a little chubby lately :)

Most of all, she has a HUGE heart and caring nature that makes her never retaliate when a defensive and insecure Lizzie growls at her. In fact, Zoey, from a very young age, must have realized that Lizzie was blind, deaf and diabetic because she always sticks by Lizzie's side, guiding her down the stairs outside and watching out, even if she doesn't need to go out herself. She also brings Lizzie toys and stays by my side as I feed Lizzie, as if she knows how important it is that Lizzie eat to keep her sugar up. She only eats once Lizzie has her shot and will actually bark at me if Lizzie starts to go upstairs without getting it. In that way, and others, Zoey is a little bossy, but in a funny way that just melts my heart.

I love all my pets, past and present, and I hope you enjoyed getting to know my pet family :) Please tell me who's in your pet family. I'd love to meet them!

Traveling with Pets by Ginny Baird

When you travel, does Fido come with you, or do you make arrangements to leave any furry friends at home? We’ve tried it both ways, and—although it can be a bit restrictive taking a four-legged friend along—we’ve discovered that, with a little advance planning, it can be done!

My husband and I have always loved taking our English Style Labrador Maggie to the beach, where she can run and swim to her heart’s content. She’s a very well-behaved dog, so we’ve taken her to visit relatives too, including my elderly Mother, who is crazy about her.

This fall, we experimented with something new: taking Maggie on her first official “road trip.” We were traveling from Virginia to the Tennessee mountains to see family, and then heading to Asheville, North Carolina. It was early November, but we still caught some changing leaves, which were glorious!

One thing I discovered is that the Chamber of Commerce of some towns provides an online listing of dog-friendly restaurants, shops and accommodations. While health codes prevent people from bringing any animals but service dogs indoors, a few restaurants have outdoor seating where pets are welcomed.

We were lucky to find a nice Bed and Breakfast in Jonesborough, TN that happily accommodated us and our pet. We also made a cool discovery in Maryville, TN. Did you know The Quinta Inn allows dogs, and does not charge a pet fee? While the accommodations weren’t elaborate, they certainly were suitable and a buffet breakfast was included.

During our final stop in Asheville, we rented a dog-friendly cabin tucked away on a mountainside and overlooking the city. It was a nice way to round out the trip, and provided yet another perspective on pet-friendly accommodations. It was probably my favorite place to stay, since it gave all of us a little more legroom and freedom to roam around. This was especially important on our first day there, when it rained cats and…um…dogs!

To help the car ride go smoothly for everyone, I packed a bag for Maggie containing some of her favorite toys, snacks and her regular food from home. We kept to her normal eating schedule as much as possible, and were sure to bring a large water bottle specifically for her—which we used to pour water into her traveling dog dish. Hubby and I brought sandwiches for the road, so we wouldn’t have to worry about finding a pet-friendly eatery between our major destinations. We also made sure to stop every few hours to give Maggie a walk and get our own circulation going. In this way, having her with us was probably good for our health, as well!

How about you? Do you travel with pets? If yes, are there any tips you can share? Please add them in the "Comments" section.
