Library Cards by Merrillee Whren

Did you know that September is Library Card Sign-up Month? I have a daughter who is an academic librarian, so she works with college students, but students of all ages, as well as adults, benefit from having a library card. Libraries are important because they encourage reading and help people discover authors and books.

I belong to Romance Writers of America, and every year at the national conference we honor a librarian who has championed the romance genre in his or her library. As romance writers, we want to recognize people who help others discover our books. Although writers can do a lot of research on the Internet, libraries and librarians can be an invaluable resource when getting information for our books.

Here's my library card.

Do you have a library card? How often do you use the library?

  1. I use our local library every week or so. It's within walking distance, so I'm doubly blessed. It's a joy to be able to donate items to the library too. Thanks for an interesting topic, Merrillee!

  2. I admit my card expired. Mom has been rereading the books on her shelves and when I find time to read, I've got my Kindle. I still love going to the Friends of the Library book sales, though!

  3. I've lost my card and based on Aileen's post, it's probably expired! I think I use Amazon as my library now.

  4. Oh yes - three cheers for libraries and librarians! My BFF is a librarian at prestigious academic think tank. Whenever we meet for lunch I get there just a bit early so I can enter the library, soak up the smell of books, revel in that noisy silence particular to libraries ... lucky her - she gets to work in paradise every day!

  6. I have to admit that I don't remember the last time I visited a library. In the UK there are massive cutbacks in library services. Sad, but in this digital age, fewer people are using our libraries here.
