I’m thankful for—no turkey disasters! by Laura Scott

‘Tis the day before Thanksgiving and all through the house, the children are stirring, hoping for a meal not a louse.
Thanksgiving is a time for reflecting back upon the year for everything thing we have to be thankful for. And truly, I have a wonderful family, great and loyal friends, a fantastic career. But all I want for this Thanksgiving is to avoid any Thanksgiving meal disasters!

It’s one thing to host your own family, but I’m hosting my in-laws. The pressure is on! The last time they came to my house for Thanksgiving, I undercooked the turkey. Yes, that’s right, I had the whole meal finished on time, but then had raw turkey so had to pop the bird back in the oven for another hour! Needless to say, the rest of the meal was less than stellar, considering everything had to be re-warmed and the potatoes were a bit crunchy.

You can see why I haven’t had my husband’s family over since that disastrous event but my mother and father-in-law have had a rough year health wise so what else could I do but offer to host? They must have forgotten what happened last time (although my kids sure haven’t) so they eagerly agreed to come.

So drop in and leave a comment about your best Thanksgiving disaster. I’m happy to offer a free copy of my Christmas book Her Mistletoe Protector. Besides, I’d hate to think I’m the only one who’s had to go through something like this.

  1. Hi Laura, well living in England we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but we do celebrate Christmas with turkey, of course. Last year my daughter hosted the family at her house for Christmas dinner--her first time doing so. My husband and I along with my son turned up a few hours before the meal to find the turkey in a sink of water. It had been a frozen one and she had forgotten to take it out of the freezer in time. Panic had set in! We did enjoy a lovely meal as she is a very good cook. Just a little later than planned.

  2. I've been fortunate not to have any disasters. My biggest issue is timing so everything finishes on time. Still working on that one after all these years. I've decided in my next house I'll have two ovens. That would help, I think...hope!

  3. Helen, your story made me laugh. Not at your daughter, but just the way simple things can trip us up. Thanks for posting.

  4. Hi Melissa, I do have two ovens this year, so I'm hoping that does help. I didn't have that last time and I think I had too much food in the oven too. Ack, here's hoping everything goes okay!

  5. I was just telling my kids last night about the now-legendary, first holiday dinner I made for my in-laws, years before the kids were born ... let's just say I have the world's best mother-in-law! ;)
