 Chapter 1

Yes, Mom, I’ll be in time for Christmas dinner, Sylvia Reynolds texted, her heart reeling from guilt. She hadn’t called home as often as promised and had missed the last two family reunions. Not that it was her fault she’d been assigned shifts during the Christmas holiday. Instead of accusing her of selfishness, why didn’t her dear relatives understand that a resident in pediatric couldn’t afford to protest the hospital sacrosanct schedule?

Her sister Jenna had already started a betting pool about Sylvia dropping out at the last minute. One more time.

I’m at the airport, she added when her mother didn’t answer the last text.
This is Jenna. My phone is dead. Using Mom’s. We’ll believe you when we see you HERE.

Sylvia clamped her jaws and ignored Jenna, her gorgeous and sassy young sister who could twist anyone around her little finger. Especially good-looking males. Sylvia was the wise one, her father often claimed—the bookish sister, her brothers and friends mercilessly teased.
Scolding Jenna wouldn’t make a difference and the family didn’t need to know that Sylvia had risked her life driving too fast on the slippery highway from Boston to Logan Airport under a mix of snow and freezing rain. She’d finished her night shift at the hospital at nine a.m. and hardly had time to go home, pack, and rush to the airport.

A backpack strapped to her shoulders, Sylvia dragged her carry-on to stand in the incredibly long line and shuffled along endless loops to reach the security checkpoint. What else did she expect when traveling two days before Christmas? More than forty-five minutes later she loaded her luggage, handbag, parka and boots on to the conveyor belt and stepped through the metal detector while her belongings crossed the X-ray machine.

Another glance at her watch alerted her that her flight might be boarding by now. Huffing with impatience, Sylvia slipped on her boots, donned her coat and collected her luggage before dashing along the terminal, hoping she would make it in time.

Without slowing, she surveyed the walls for monitors. A couple hung from the ceiling. Tipping her chin up, she slowed her stride to read the departure information.
And gasped when her foot suddenly wobbled and twisted.
“Ouch,” she shrieked. Arms flailing with her carryon and handbag, she stumbled and sprawled on the carpeted floor.
What on earth had she stepped on?

Baby cries echoed her scream.
Right away strong hands lifted her from the floor. She turned her head and stared into the most dazzling deep-ocean-blue eyes she’d ever seen, so close to her face.
“Are you okay?” the man asked in a worried voice.
“I don’t know. I think so.” How could she think with his arms holding her against his solid chest?
The baby’s screams grew louder.
Almost carrying her, her rescuer helped Sylvia to a chair.

“Excuse me.” He picked up a pink rattle off the floor, wiped it with a tissue, and gave it to the baby fretting in a nearby stroller. “It’s okay, little doll. Here’s your toy. A bit distorted though.” The baby grabbed it, sniffled, and shook the plastic thing, laughing at the musical noise.

“It’s the culprit responsible for your fall.” His apologetic smile did wonders to soothe the pain in Sylvia’s ankle. “Please take off your boot and let me look at your foot.”

“It’s not hurting as much.” But the man was right. As a doctor, she would have advised anyone in the same situation to check the painful area. She pulled her boot and sock off, wiggled her sole and toes, and winced at the surge of pain.

“Allow me.” He crouched in front of her, grabbed her heel in his palm, and massaged her ankle. “How does it feel?” Concern rang in his voice.
“Huh... okay.” It felt so good she wanted to beg him not to stop.

“Passengers for Northwest Flight 825 report to the gate counter.”
His hands were so warm and firm, yet gentle, she’d almost forgotten about her flight.
“I’m doing much better. No broken bones or pulled muscles. Thanks for your help. I have a plane to catch but they just called. Hopefully there’s no problem.”

Concerned about the call to passengers of Northwest Flight 825, she turned her head toward the gate door. “I don’t see a line anymore in front of the boarding gate.”
“Which flight are you taking?” the man who had rescued her asked.
“825 to Chicago.”
“Unfortunately, it’s been canceled because of engine malfunction.”
“Are you serious?”

From chemistry in the lab to chemistry between people.

Welcome to the new authors who recently joined Sweet Romance Reads, a fantastic group.
Let me explain how my life shifted from chemistry in the lab to chemistry between people.
I grew up in a house cluttered with books, so many books in bookcases, drawers, under the beds in boxes. My mother built tables with columns of books covered with a nice red tablecloth adorned with a vase of artificial flowers. Yet my father, a literature professor and writer, repeated that writing books never fed a man and insisted that his daughters should seek scientific careers. And we did. But I never imagined that hazardous waste analysis would lead me to write novels.

When my Ph.D. and work in chemistry landed me contracts to refurbish laboratories in foreign countries, I traveled to more than fifty countries on business or vacation. To relax from my hectic schedule, I avidly read romance and mentally plotted my own novels. Eventually, I left my high-pressure scientific career to share with readers the many stories brewing in my head.

While struggling on the first draft of my first novel, I sent emails to Debbie Macomber and Stephanie Laurence, my two favorite authors at the time. They both answered with encouragement and Debbie advised me to join RWA and my local chapter. I received my first contract during a Florida Romance Writers conference in 2007 and published six books in the next three years.

Self-publishing my novels was the best thing I ever did for my publishing career. In 2012, my books landed on the Amazon bestseller list for contemporary romance and medical romance. Amazon translated Babies in the Bargain in German and French, and later Right Name, Wrong Man in German. I was walking on cloud nine when Amazon posted my name in the 100 most Popular Authors in Romance list for several months.

Filled with energy and enthusiasm, I hid in my writing cave and wrote for days and nights, stopping only to walk on the beach or exercise at the gym. I tried my hand at creating series like Holiday Babies Series that garnered over hundred reviews. When the sales decreased, I coordinated boxed anthologies with other authors. Together, we formatted, uploaded on various platforms and promoted non-stop, and reached the USA Today bestseller lists (8 times) and the New York Times bestseller list.

I was delighted to receive an Outstanding Achiever Award from Affaire de Coeur Magazine; a two-time Best Contemporary Romance of the Year from Readers Favorite; a Best Romance Novel of the Year from Preditors & Editors Readers Poll; and an EPIC Award finalist.

I write contemporary romance, sweet romance, romantic suspense, medical romance, and paranormal fantasy. Sprinkled with a good dose of humor, my stories are set in the fascinating places I visited, from exotic Belarus, historical France, touristic Spain, and lively Italy to the beaches of Greece, the monuments of Egypt and the mysterious Islands of Seychelles—or more simply in Ohio, Florida, Boston and Washington, DC.

If you like to travel and love to read, come and enjoy my international romances. Meet the spirited heroines and the alpha heroes who share irresistible chemistry in stories that simmer with emotion.

Hurricane Matthew Watch by Kristin Wallace

So as I write this, South Florida is bracing for Hurricane Matthew. It looks like it will hit north of where I live in Miami, but could still experience power outages, flooding and some damage. The worst thing is, some of the forecast models have the storm making a loop and coming BACK to Florida next week!!!

WHAT?????

I don’t think I can handle this storm prep again…not to mention the possibility of another landfall.

I lived through Hurricane Andrew many years ago. I had just graduated from college and I was living with my parents on Brickell Avenue, which has a lot of high rises and condos. We had to leave and ended up staying with friends further west. The storm ended up coming in south of us and the devastation was incredible. Destruction everywhere. After the storm my family tried to drive back to the condo to check things out. Trees were down, debris everywhere, street signs gone, traffic light missing. It was hard to even tell where we were. At one point we realized we had left the road and were driving in the middle of a golf course. The recovery from that storm went on for months.

While the threat is real and possible damage nothing to laugh, there is humor during these times. Seeing the news coverage reminds me of how really stupid some of the reporting gets. The news channels down here live for these storms. We don’t get a lot of wild weather. Most of the forecasts consist of “Partly sunny with storms in the afternoon.” It’s pretty boring. A tropical storm or hurricane is exciting. It gives them something to talk about endlessly. Probably the most entertaining thing about a storm are the ill-fated reporters who are assigned the duty of standing outside so they can tell us that, yes in fact, it is raining and the wind is blowing…HARD! I think we can hear that is pouring and that the wind is roaring, thank you. Still, they like to do it for the drama. Here are some examples of the stupidity for your pleasure.

But seriously, this hurricane is no joke. When this blog posts, hopefully the storm will be out of here and will NOT BE COMING BACK. Also be praying for those in the South Carolina where the storm could head after Florida.
