Valentine’s Day Magic: A Weekend of Love and Second Chances by Merri Maywether

There’s something magical about Valentine’s Day, especially when it falls on a Friday. The holiday feels like an open invitation to turn a single day of romance into an entire weekend of celebration—and that’s exactly what inspired me while writing my newest release, My Grumpy Valentine.

One of my favorite things about Valentine’s Day is the excitement it brings, especially from kids. Their joy over heart-shaped cookies, candies, and endless crafts with heart cutouts adds to my own excitement for the holiday. Their enthusiasm is so pure and delightful, and I’ve channeled that same energy into the story.

This year in Hope Springs, Montana, Valentine’s weekend becomes a delightful series of events: a Friday night concert, a Saturday dance, and a cozy Sunday brunch. It’s a time for love, laughter, and (imagine me tapping my fingers together behind the keybord) maybe even a little matchmaking magic.

Of course, no romance is complete without a bit of drama, and our cinnamon roll hero, Eugene, certainly delivers. Let me give you a peek behind the scenes:

A year ago, Kelly (she’s the grumpy one…but only with Eugene) invited Eugene on a “friend date” for Valentine’s Day.

But thanks to Eugene’s mischievous chihuahua, Brutus, the note never reached him. That’s right—Brutus hid the note! Eugene only finds it a year later, and let’s just say that both Eugene and Cupid have some work to do.

With a bit of help from Brutus, the meddling small-town friends and family, and maybe even Cupid himself, Eugene and Kelly are about to be nudged (or shoved) toward their happily-ever-after. Their story is filled with humor, heart, visits from characters in the other Hope Springs stories....and the sweet chaos of love that only Valentine’s weekend can bring.

Writing My Grumpy Valentine was a joy, especially because it allowed me to explore the ways love blooms. It also was a fun way to show that love isn’t always perfect or predictable, but it’s always worth the effort.

Now that Valentine’s Day has passed, I’d love to hear from you: What was your favorite part of the holiday? Did you try something new, indulge in sweet treats, or share special moments with loved ones? Let me know in the comments—I can’t wait to hear your stories!
