Reading is Healthy Fun by Alicia Street

Did you know that on the list of the most popular hobbies, reading is number one?

Not surprising to me. I was one of those kids who started reading before I even got to school, and I haven’t stopped since.

As author George R.R. Martin said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before dying. One who never reads lives only one.”

Aside from the pleasure reading gives, apparently sharing in the lives of the characters in a book helps increase our ability to empathize with others and supports emotional development.

And it’s good for our brain. One study suggests a regular reading habit helps develop neural networks, increasing our ability for complex thinking and strengthening the brain against things like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

There is even a system of bibliotherapy where a psychologist recommends certain books for patients to read to help them work through certain life issues. I know thehy sure help me.

When the news of the world is too harsh and upsetting, I treat myself to a romance with a satisfying happily ever after.

Is reading your favorite hobby?

  2. I love to read, too, but I don't do as much of it as I used to before I started writing my own books.
