Christmas Presence by Magdalena Scott

Last year, the Christmas season wore me out. You can read my brief replay by clicking here

This season has been full of even more concerts and parties, but there have also been plenty of quiet evenings watching old Christmas movies or reading a holiday romance.

I've done a little cooking, and will do a bit more. There are five events on the calendar for Dec. 24 and 25, and I'm looking forward to each one.

And this year, instead of being too exhausted to write, I'm happy with what I have accomplished.

Evidently someplace along the way I accidentally found the mix of activities and expectations that works for me.

Although I've donated to charity and done my annual stint with the Salvation Army bell, I haven't set foot in a mall, or wrapped a package. No one in my little family needs or wants more stuff. For December 25th, after attending a friend's champagne brunch and before the big family dinner in the evening, there's talk of Scrabble and other board games. This year, we're giving each other Christmas presence--spending relaxed time together, just enjoying each other's company. There's nothing anyone could put under my tree that would be better than that.

Are you doing anything different with your holiday celebrations this year?

  1. Sounds like such a perfect Christmas. The joy in our lives is so easily obscured by the stuff we add on unnecessarily. Someday I'll be smarter about it!

    1. Grace, I'm the gal who still cries at the end of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Have a great holiday...I'm trying not to be jealous of your trip. :)

  2. How nice, Magdalena! I love your idea of "Christmas Presence"! We're not quite there yet but we've started cutting back on the amount of stuff we accumulate by asking our kids to only give us "consumables"... a nice bottle of wine, a pound of coffee, or even a subscription to a magazine we might like. It's helped not having additional items to clutter up the house when we're preparing to downsize. Wishing you a lovely holiday!

    1. Ginny, the consumable gifts are a great idea! Remind me to tell you about a book that may help with downsizing.

  3. What a great reminder! This year will be different because my parents and three of five siblings will be coming out to my house for Christmas (or sometime during the holiday week) in part to help with some renovation projects, but also just to enjoy the day together. I'm most excited to see my brother, James since I think it's been 5 years since the last time we were together for Christmas.

    1. That sounds like a super fun, yet productive, way to celebrate, Jessica. You'll be making lots of family memories. I'm so glad your brother James can be with you, too. :)

  4. I'm packing up my utensils and cooking for my mother at her place. She's 90 and can't make the trip to my house. It means I can't sit and drink my coffee in front of the tree at 5 am, I'll be loading up the car. But I'm so very grateful she's still around

  5. I am most likely going to spend a quiet Christmas at home and it looks like I won't be getting together with my brother's and their families until New Year.. That is just fine with me.

    1. It does help to discuss ahead of time with those involved, Nicki. My guy's sister-in-law asked if it would be okay *not* to exchange gifts at their Christmas night gathering--and I high-fived her. :D
