Father's Day Gift Ideas for the Dad who Reads by Donna Fasano

Father’s Day is quickly approaching. But don’t panic. There’s still time to find something for your dad that will have you earning The Favorite Child Award.

If your dad coached your ball team, or the two of you spent quality time at the ballpark, this book is a perfect choice. While John Grisham is well known for his legal thrillers, Calico Joe whisks the reader to a baseball park in 1973. This is a quick and easy-read story that takes a nostalgic look at American life without being overly sentimental.

Everyone knows by now that The Cuckoo’s Calling was written by J.K. Rowling (of Harry Potter fame) under the pen name Robert Galbraith. This well-written, engrossing detective novel is the first in the Cormoran Strike series. Book 2 is The Silkworm, and it just so happens that the hardcover copy is a few cents cheaper than the paperback right now. Your dad will love this series.

Although Laura Hillenbrand wrote Unbroken in 2010, the book is getting its second wind thanks to the movie adaptation. It’s the true story of a World War II pilot who survived a plane crash and a stint in a POW camp. Perfect for military-loving or history-buff dads.

If your dad loves his grill, have I got a book for him! Chris Lilly is executive chef at Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q. He’s a 6-time winner of the World Championship BBQ Cook-off, and he reveals all the family secrets in Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ Book—everything from glazes, to rubs, and roasting techniques. This one is mmmm-mmmm good!

For the travelin’ dad, I found Once In A Lifetime Trips by Chris Santella. Arranged by destination type—island, jungle, ocean, desert, mountain, country, sky, city—this book will stir your dad’s dreams of seeing the world with 50 extraordinary adventures complete with beautiful photographs and vivid essays.

There you have it; my list of book suggestions for your dad. Please give him an extra big hug (I so wish my dad were here so I could do the same). Enjoy every minute of Father’s Day!

  1. What a great list, Donna! Thanks for sharing it. Although I don't have any dads to buy gifts for anymore, I wouldn't have minded a copy of "Once in a Lifetime Trips" for Mothers Day. :)
